Godzilla
In case you haven't noticed, the forthcoming "Godzilla" doesn't have a whiff, suggestion or note of the campiness some of the previous incarnations of the movie monster may have had. And there's a very specific reason for that.

There are few movies this summer that can instill intrigue just with a single sound, but "Godzilla" sure can. The big budget leap from "Monsters" director Gareth Edwards arrives on the big screen next month, and he's been front and center of the campaign so far, sharing his enthusiasm and his pedigree with newcomers to the franchise.

It's not often one can get truly excited for a tentpole, when it seems every big budget movie is merely a set up for the next one. And while we're sure everyone involved with "Godzilla" is thinking franchise, that doesn't diminish the fact that Gareth Edwards' film looks an exciting and gripping take on the material, and one not necessarily geared to move toys. And certainly, as far as this summer goes, it's one that's higher on a radar than most other studio fare coming down the line.

Godzilla
This is the kind of tentpole we can get behind. In a couple months, "Godzilla" will be stomping back onto screens around the world, but the movie brings one major ingredient with it that's missing from the Marvel movies, and other remakes, sequels and spinoffs: freshness. Yes, it's a new take on the famous monster that scared audiences decades ago, but yet in the hands of director Gareth Edwards, it feels revitalized, new and authentic. That being said, he did reveal an interesting influence when approaching the movie.

If you read our 100 Most Anticipated Films of 2014 feature, and you should, you’ll know that the only tentpoles that made it into the top 25 were Christopher Nolan's "Interstellar," "Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes" from director Matt Reeves and the new “Godzilla” by filmmaker Gareth Edwards. Edwards impressed with his low-budget monster movie “Monsters” in 2010, but taking such a gigantic leap seemed like it could potentially be biting off more than he could chew. But given everything we’ve seen so far, “Godzilla” looks great, plausible, intriguing, even exciting. In short, we’re borderline enthusiastic for a studio tentpole (and given last year’s weak summer, you can probably understand our skepticism).

Earlier this week, the full-length trailer for "Godzilla" arrived, and it was pretty terrific. Looking much smarter than your average summer blockbuster, with real menace, stakes and goosebump-raising atmosphere, it certainly got people talking about the movie and what to expect. Well, director Gareth Edwards is ready to provide some feedback, even if he's still playing his cards close to the vest.

"The great thing with a project like 'Godzilla' is that when you’re doing a movie like this that involves a monster that’s so beloved, you suddenly get access to the greatest visual artists out there working today. So I was very lucky in terms of that," director Gareth Edwards told Bloody Disgusting last summer. "...in terms of designing 'Godzilla,' we spent about an entire year just working on that aspect alone. You never quite feel like you have enough time but I wouldn’t change a single thing with the design. I’m so incredibly happy with it."

Godzilla
If we were to hazard a guess based on the myriad viral images Legendary Pictures has released of their "Godzilla" reboot/redo/do-over, we'd say sinkholes—and ones some world governments believe should be secret—factor in quite heavily in the plot. Or at least the mechanics of what gets the story engine moving. Following the leak of Comic-Con footage in October that made some impressive waves, the official trailer for "Godzilla" is here. Run for cover.
