Godzilla
Casual moviegoers may not recognize the name Gareth Edwards, but it's more than likely that this will change in the next couple of years. Not only is he at the helm of one of the upcoming "Star Wars" films, but he's the director of Legendary Pictures’ “Godzilla,” a movie that grossed nearly $500 million worldwide and will likely crack that number when all is said and done (the movie is teetering just on the edge of hitting $200 million at home as well).

10 Exciting Big Studio Director Transitions On The Horizon
Back in March, we unveiled a list of one-time indie directors who suddenly made the jump to hyperspace with blockbuster projects, and their associated blockbuster budgets. That piece noted that this was “a trend that’s become increasingly prevalent over the last decade or so” and sketched out some of the budget boosts these film-makers were getting, often having 5 or 10 times the budget of their previous film dumped in their laps by the studios, with a range of results.

Gareth Edwards, Star Wars
The career of Gareth Edwards is one that would make a film school student envious. His first film, "Monsters," was a labor of love, made on a shoestring budget, with the VFX largely done a laptop. The result? A solid indie highlighting a director with a real sense of mood and craft. That effort found him leveraged into the blockbuster "Godzilla," and no matter what you thought of it, the movie was a huge smash, opening last weekend over $90 million at the box office. So what does Edwards do next? He's doing to Disneyland. Kinda.

Godzilla
With the mystery dissolved and a sequel to “Godzilla” officially in the works after last weekend’s $93 million haul, we can officially start to look at Gareth Edwards’ take on the monster as a jumping off point for new opponents and storylines hinted at already. However, as we discussed in our Best and Worst analysis of the film, strong characters—women especially—weren’t exactly its strongest aspect, but recently Edwards revealed that early iterations proved quite a different approach.

Godzilla
After his film “Godzilla” raked in $93 million at the box office this past weekend, you can bet director Gareth Edwards is having a good week. The film’s not only a financial success thus far, but it’s received approval from the majority of critics as well. And as part of New York Times’s regular feature, Anatomy of a Scene, the director recently got a chance to speak in great detail about a sequence from “Godzilla” that he appears to be particularly proud of.

Godzilla
Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros.’ “Godzilla” (our review) did so well this weekend (almost $200 million worldwide) that by Sunday they had already announced a sequel was in the works. And of course, with a massive opening like that, it’s to be expected. The monster movie is a triumph, at the very least, for director Gareth Edwards. His directorial career started with “Monsters," a super lo-fi, low-budget monster movie about an unlikely pair of strangers trying to travel from Central America to the United States, in a world (and particularly the border of Mexico), now infested with gigantic creatures, that resembles a police state.

Godzilla
"Godzilla" stomps into theatres tomorrow night, and while our own Rodrigo Perez didn't dig the film, saying that it "abandons most of its absorbing emotional legwork for a fairly rote and straightforward rock ‘em, sock ‘em monster movie," the latter quotient is what most people are likely for. And we suppose on that end, Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures' blockbuster will deliver. But in case you're on the fence about checking it out, some new promo material is here to kick you in the pants to buy a ticket.

Godzilla
Today in New York and Los Angeles, select critics got a chance to catch an early screening of "Godzilla," and as you might guess, everyone is under embargo for the moment about how the movie plays out. But Vulture danced lightly around that issue, by not addressing the movie specifically, but instead talking about the monster at the center of it. Or rather, how long it takes for the monster to show up.

Godzilla
"Godzilla" is coming. We're two weeks away from cinema's most famous monster returning and stomping all over screens around the world, and for the all special effects, it's director Gareth Edwards stirring up the most excitement. His enthusiasm has been front and centre of a number of mini-promos for the movie, and that continues today, where he names his three biggest inspirations.

Godzilla
Gareth Edwards is not a household name by any stretch, but that may change after "Godzilla" arrives in theatres next month. Warner Bros. (at least thus far) has kept the goodies hidden from view and instead have placed Edwards (and his enthusiasm) at the front of a handful of featurettes, with a couple more dropping in the last week.
