The Monuments Men
"The Monuments Men" always felt like a worthwhile (if dicey) proposition: it's the true-life tale of a band of Allied art historians and curators who are dropped into occupied territory during the frenzied final moments of World War II, and their goal was simple and seemingly insurmountable. In the words of one character, they were to "protect what's left and find what's missing." Or, secure all of the bridges, artwork, and architectural treasures, while also locating notable works of art that had been stolen by the Nazis and returning them to their rightful owners. Considering how well traveled World War II movies are, it stood to reason that a different take would be welcome and somewhat tricky. Turns out it was even trickier than originally imagined and that for all of its best efforts, "The Monuments Men" remains an unwieldy, overtly sentimental (but still emotionally distant) epic.

The Monuments Men
Originally set for release last month, “The Monuments Men,” George Clooney’s latest directorial outing, was pushed back to February to make sure it was the best it could be. Now with the release mere weeks away, the men-on-a-mission film has unleashed a brand-new clip and two featurettes to lure you away from the Oscar nominees still in theaters.

The Monuments Men
While the woulda/shoulda/coulda conversation about the awards potential for "The Monuments Men" will likely pop up again once reviews for the film start coming in, the bottom line is that it simply wasn't ready. Originally slated to arrive this month, George Clooney's WWII caper was pushed a couple of months so editing, effects and even the score could be finished in time without compromising quality. So with that caveat out of the way, and the production on schedule for a February release, a lot more is being shown off from the movie.

While it won't be in the Oscar mix both because it won't be ready and for the fact that it's, as George Clooney calls it, "a commercial, non-cynical piece of entertainment," "Monuments Men" still has the kind of star power to attract a red carpet. Indeed, it will be making its international premiere at the Berlin Film Festival in just a couple of months. And with that in mind, a brand new overseas trailer has arrived.

So why do celebrities like endorsing products? Well, Page Six's recent report is fairly instructive, as they reveal that Matt Damon got paid $150,000/second, or $3 million, for twenty seconds of work to feature in a new Nespresso spot with his good pal George Clooney.

Monuments Men
It has been a bit of wild awards season as we head into the closing months. Bennett Miller's "Foxcatcher" got pushed to 2014, while there has been a continual question mark around Martin Scorsese's "The Wolf Of Wall Street," and whether or not it would be ready in time. But it looks like yet another movie is bowing out of the season.

Monuments Men
The conversation until now has positioned George Clooney's "Monuments Men" as an "Ocean's Eleven"-esque WWII caper, but not a serious Oscar contender. But that talk will likely change with the arrival of the newest trailer for the film, one that still has the lighter tone of the first teaser, but imbues with some serious elements.

Gravity, Bullock, Clooney
Since JFK vowed to put a man on the moon in 1961, space has represented untold possibility. Hope. Optimism. But once we actually got there, we realized what a terrifying place it can be. An endless void, freezing and/or burning, a place without air or life. But most terrifyingly of all, if you die in space, you die alone: thousands of miles above and away from your loved ones. And more than anything, aren’t we most afraid of dying alone? Alfonso Cuaron seems to think so, as that’s the fear that drives his new film, the extraordinary “Gravity.”

So, what is "Monuments Men"? A WWII version of "Ocean's Eleven"? A lighter take on "The Good German" era? Well, whatever the film turns out to be, it's a consciously lighter turn from writer/actor/director George Clooney. "[Producer] Grant [Heslov] and I were looking to do a film that was less cynical than a lot of the films we do," Clooney told USA Today, and with the first trailer for this upcoming movie arriving today, it'll prove that point.

Gravity trailer, Clooney
Alfonso Cuarón's long-awaited follow-up to 2006's "Children of Men"is finally here. Or at least the trailer is. Or wait, that's coming Thursday. So what do we have in the meantime? Well, it's about 10 seconds or less of teaser footage from the upcoming trailer for "Gravity," Cuarón's outer space thriller starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney. Yes, you hate the tease of a tease. Understandably, so do we. But admittedly, this film has been in the works for so long now it is somewhat of a relief to finally see some evidence that it finally and actually exists.
