Tupac Shakur Reportedly Would Have Auditioned For Mace Windu In 'Phantom Menace' Before His Death

Tupac Shakur, Jedi
Here’s a strange, wtf what might have been of the day, though it does sound somewhat apocryphal. While Tupac Shakur was gunned down in 1996, he apparently was about to audition for 1999’s “Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.” Read More »

Star Wars Holiday special
If one wanted to discover the origins of George Lucas' self proclaimed "control freak" tendencies vis a vis the "Star Wars" universe, one could arguably trace them back to November 1978. This was the year of the now universally reviled "Star Wars: Holiday Special," a "Star Wars"-themed TV event that aired only once on CBS.

“Raiders of the Lost Ark” was the first and either the best or the second-best of the Indiana Jones films (you know this to be true, commenters), and it now seems like such a stone-cold, well-known classic that it's hard to believe its 1981 release was a gamble of sorts. Sure, it had George Lucas and Steven Spielberg behind it, who at the time were amicably tied for the title of “most powerful film-maker in the world”: but the film appeared to be a hokey, intentionally old-fashioned attempt at a two-fisted tale about ne'er-do-well Nazis and shifty Arabs, starring that guy who played Han Solo in those movies about space. This could easily have been a “Lone Ranger”-type situation.

Star Wars George Lucas
Barely a week has passed since word was kicking around about the future of the "Star Wars" franchise, which is now sitting in the hands of J.J. Abrams, and even though 'Episode 7' is still a distance from its 2015, it seems it's all anyone can talk about. Moreover, it looks like George Lucas is feeling a bit conflicted about not being a bigger part of that conversation.

Steven Spielberg and George Lucas, who spent a good decade or so amiably switching around the top two places on everybody's “Most Vastly Powerful Person In Hollywood” list, have been back in the news recently musing on the state of the industry now and in the future: a now and a future that they feel is a little grim for them personally and the moviegoer more generally.

Star Wars: Episode 3 -- Revenge Of The Sith
If only young George Lucas could have travelled forward in time to advise his older self. Let's flashback for a moment to 1983, when Lucas was hard at work on 'Return Of The Jedi.' He was on top of the world at that point, with a game-changing sci-fi franchise under his belt and seemingly every door in Hollywood open to him. Yet even then he realized "Star Wars" was only as good as the stories it told. In this excerpt from the documentary "From 'Star Wars to Jedi: The Making of a Saga," we see a young Lucas talking about special effects as merely a "tool," and not the means to an end... oh how things changed!

Has George Lucas just quashed the decades-long beef between "Star Trek" nerds and "Star Wars" dorks? For years, dudes with tape holding together their glasses and pocket protectors protruding proudly from their shirt pockets have debated amongst themselves about which franchise had the most sci-fi bonafides. Well, now that he's left Lucasfilm, maybe Lucas should just get a job at the U.N. because he just provided the most diplomatic and humble assessment of the relationship between the two mega-series, quietly in a bonus feature on the recently released documentary "Trek Nation."

George Lucas Says He Hasn't Talked To J.J. Abrams About 'Episode VII' Yet: Is That A Good Thing Or A Bad Thing?

There are many, many questions regarding the continuation of the "Star Wars" series -- the first of which, "Episode VII," is now being worked on by J.J. Abrams -- but one of the most pertinent of them is the extent to which franchise granddaddy George Lucas will be involved. As the creator of the series, and the director of the first movie, many will feel ambivalent about "Star Wars" films without Lucas involved, but others could be comforted by his absence, given the general quality of the prequels, all of which were directed by Lucas.

As the “Star Wars” films enter their period of new storylines, recurring characters, and calendar domination over the next decade, George Lucas only stands now to distance himself from his creation, and reportedly get to work on more intimate, experimental ventures. And while we wait to see the results of those efforts, an older documentary on the man provides a close look on his life leading up and into his life-changing franchise.
