At one time, it seemed inconceivable that enfant terrible Harmony Korine would do anything close to courting the mainstream, let alone shoot a picture with folks like James Franco, Vanessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez and Ashley Benson. But after the awesomely lo-fi audience provocation "Trash Humpers," it seems kind of logical that Korine would make something to appeal to the folks who couldn't make it to the end of that movie. And so: "Spring Breakers." And get ready, because it's gonna get wet.

There's not much you need to know about the omnibus "The Fourth Dimension" except that it features a short directed by Harmony Korine, and starring Val Kilmer as a motivation speaker who has awesome secrets. And while it might seem like the kind of film that would have to finish doing the festival rounds, then get picked up by an obscure indie outlet before it begins to play a year later, once a week, at your local arthouse, the folks at Vice Films seem to have circumvented that route.

“I’m tired of seeing the same thing every single day...there’s more than just Spring break,” Selena Gomez laments in Harmony Korine’s latest feature. “It’s your chance to see something different.” The rather orthodox (well at least for Korine), “Spring Breakers,” which premiered in Venice last week (read our review here), makes its North American debut at the Toronto International Film Festival this week. In our review we called the picture a "semi-conventional genre flick and a future cult favorite.”

This will make you feel old: it has been 18 years since Harmony Korine wrote “Kids” at the age of 21, with the Larry Clark directed film proving to be something of a firecracker in the midst of mid-90s indie cinema, by turns controversial, seedy, and honest. Korine made his own directorial debut with 1998’s “Gummo,” and over the last 15 or so years has made films that (with the possible exception of “Mister Lonely”), push aesthetic & critical boundaries further and further, culminating in 2009’s “Trash Humpers,” a film shot on a VHS camcorder, featuring a cast in old-people masks generally trying to provoke the audience into walking out. So where could he possibly go from there?

John Hillcoat, Wong Kar-Wai, Kathryn Bigelow, Paul Thomas Anderson, David O. Russell, Spike Jonze and Charlie Kaufman. To say that Megan Ellison and her Annapurna Pictures have impeccable taste in filmmakers would be an understatement, and the shingle is now adding another acclaimed name under the banner.

Given all the ingredients for it to be potentially batshit crazy, the first clip to make its way online from Harmony Korine's "Spring Breakers" is relatively normal.

The last major additions to this year's Toronto International Film Festival have been unveiled, and unsurprisingly, along with the new world premieres, there's several films from the Venice line-up, which kicks off the week before. Along with the already announced "The Master" and "To The Wonder," Torontoites will also get to see Brian DePalma's "Passion" and Harmony Korine's "Spring Breakers," both of which are set to bow on the Lido the week before.

"Just when we think Korine was out of twists, he's come with another one, so we wonder what's coming next," we wrote at the end of our last update about "Spring Breakers," which was recently revealed to have electronic dance music guy Skrillex providing some music for the movie, with celebrated music supervisor Randall Poster (the Wes Anderson movies) also taking part. And as we expected, another surprise, with a big musical name now also throwing his weight in there as well.
