SFIFF: Harmony Korine & Val Kilmer Talk Stepping Into 'The Fourth Dimension'

Last Friday night, “The Fourth Dimension” made its world premiere at the San Francisco International Film Festival, a collaborative film that we thought got satisfying results out of its premise. In attendance were the set of directors responsible for the three short films created based on a collection of random instructions generated by Vice Films producer Eddy Moretti in a collaboration with Grolsch Film Works. The directors tapped included Harmony Korine (“Trash Humpers,” “Gummo”), Aleksei Fedorchenko (“Silent Souls”) and Polish director Jan Kwiecinski making his big screen debut. We sat down to talk to Harmony Korine and Val Kilmer -- who stars in Korine’s film as a ridiculous motivational speaker -- about their short “Lotus Community Workshop.”

Val Kilmer + Harmony Korine + roller rink + motivational speaking....if that doesn't get your cinematic nether regions wet, then we don't know what to tell you. But there is perhaps no pairing more inspired or more insane heading to cinemas this year than the actor and director on their upcoming segment in the omnibus project "The Fourth Dimension." And with a trailer now landing for the movie, we have our first look at their collaboration. And yeah, it looks amazing.

If you were paying attention a couple of hours ago, you'll know that the Tribeca Film Festival has announced its preliminary slate beyond the opening night film, "The Five-Year Engagement." And it's a pretty good one so far, with highlights including "Jack And Diane," Bradley Rust Gray's long-awaited follow-up to the 2009's "The Exploding Girl," the Mexico-set drama "The Girl," starring Abbie Cornish, and much more.

Festivals

SXSW kicks off later this week, but once you're done slurping the BBQ sauce off your fingers, pack your backs and head north to Manhattan, as the Tribeca Film Festival is gearing up to unspool in April. To whet cinephile appetites, organizers have dropped the lineup for the World Narrative Feature Competition, World Documentary Feature Competition and Viewpoints categories, and there are plenty of titles to take note of.

Considering she's the Nickelodeon-series leading scion of Hollywood royalty, the daughter of Eric Roberts and niece of Julia Roberts, Emma Roberts has been laudable in her desire to mix it up a bit. Of course, there were the early teen vehicles, like "Aquamarine," "Wild Child" and "Hotel For Dogs," but she's also mixed up her Hollywood fare like "Scream 4" with theoretically more interesting indie films, like "Lymelife," "It's Kind of a Funny Story" and "The Art of Getting By." We can't say we've been huge fans of any of them, but it at least shows a desire to be something other than America's next sweetheart.

Emma Roberts Co-Stars; Also, WTFUpdate: Vanessa Hudgens and Selena Gomez are also in talks to star. The trio will play the gang of girls in the film with Roberts as danger loving Southern brunette, and Gomez as the stuck-up, religious type.

Jan Kwiecinski & Alexei Fedorchenko Join Harmony Korine In Forthcoming OmnibusIt has already been a busy year for Harmony Korine but his calendar keeps filling up further, and that's just fine by us. He's teamed with James Franco on some kind of street gang project, premiered his short film collaboration with Die Antwoord "Umshini Wam," created an ad for Indian megacorp Mahindra, and is working on a short film with Val Kilmer that will form part of a Dogme-esque omnibus film. We'll have more on that in a second, but it appears there is yet another project Korine has been working on.

Will Be One Part Of An International Anthology Film Produced By Vice FilmsWhen we first learned that Harmony Korine was teaming up with Val Kilmer for a mysterious Nashville-set project about a motivational speaker it seemed like a match made in Awesome Heaven. As it seems with most Korine projects these days, it's been flying under the radar moving to its own, probably bizarro, beat, but it seems there is much much more to this already idiosyncratic undertaking.
