J.J. Abrams, 'Star Wars'
When the famously tight-lipped J.J. Abrams was announced earlier this year as the director of “Star Wars: Episode VII,” it was both a surprise and the obvious choice. And while many argued about what it means to have the same man in charge of both “Star Wars” and “Star Trek,” what will happen with the inevitable “Star Trek 3,” and whether or not Abrams is a pig, the filmmaker has stayed as silent as always. With six weeks to go until “Star Trek Into Darkness” and the press tour gearing up to begin, Abrams has decided to get out ahead of the curve and talk about “Star Wars.”

Having already dipped his toes into "Mission: Impossible," and with "Star Trek" and "Star Wars" now under his belt, it seems there isn't a franchise around that J.J. Abrams won't touch, and as fans already know, he once penned a script for a Superman movie. Without getting lost in the development history, this was in the long years before "Superman Returns" when Warner Bros. was trying to figure out how to reboot the iconic hero, with a number of filmmakers and writers all developing different takes, but Abrams version may be the most infamous.

Karl Urban Minka Kelly JJ Abrams TV Robot Cops
We’ll never be able to comprehend just how he finds the time, but every week it sounds like we’re reading about another J.J Abrams project, so it's very easy to lose track of them all. One of his TV projects -- which formerly went by the title of “Inhuman,” but is now going simply by “Human” – is busy casting its pilot for Fox at the moment, and it looks like Karl Urban will be joining the already-cast Michael Ealy as one of the leads.

...well, that certainly would've been different. Mark Wahlberg hasn't dipped his toes into the sci-fi genre much, and we'd reckon maybe that's because of the whole "Planet Of The Apes" thing. And while he's reuniting with his bud Michael Bay for "Transfomers 4," the actor reveals that he couldn've been part of another icon franchise...had he understood the script.

Walt Disney's decision to hire J.J. Abrams to direct "Star Wars: Episode 7" still has people talking, and rightly so. With one foot already in the rebooted "Star Trek" franchise, many wonder if he can make a distinctive enough "Star Wars" movie so that it isn't one mass Abrams-y sci-fi blob. Still others wish Disney would've selected any number of other talented people to kick off the next three sequels. And then there's William Shatner, whose feelings on the matter are made plain and clear.

Ever since the surprise announcement that J.J. Abrams would direct "Stars Wars: Episode VII," the internet has churned in rampant speculation mode. What will these films entail? Who will star? What characters would return? But in another corner of the galaxy, many were asking what would happen to Abrams' "Star Trek" franchise. The sequel, "Star Trek Into Darkness," hits theaters in May at the beginning of blockbuster season, but what of future installments? Won't Abrams be too busy with "Star Wars," particularly if that 2015 release date gets locked down?

Fanboy curiosity has always been manic, but it's curdled into desperation of late. Adult geeks have looked at "Iron Man 3" children's toys to assay spoiler characteristics in upcoming Marvel films, but the intense inquisitive desire surrounding "Star Trek Into Darkness" and its main villain is true child's play in comparison. Perhaps it's because director J.J. Abrams is so secretive that it has become a challenge to nerds to figure everything out in advance, and so no one is buying that Benedict Cumberbatch's antagonist character (named John Harrison) is who the film says he is and assume he's Khan, as played by Ricardo Montalban in "Star Trek 2".

J.J. Abrams has been on an absolute tear the past few years, tipping his glass to Ridley Scott's widespread work ethic as he taps franchise after franchise with his “Star Trek” and “Star Wars” involvement alongside numerous biopics and pilots. And while those projects may point to his schedule growing full, naturally he's now decided to use the five minutes left free to collaborate on two critically acclaimed video game adaptations.
