To say that James Franco is a busy man is like saying that "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" could have used a more charismatic human lead. Franco is a screenwriter, a director, an awards host, a poet, a novelist, a soap star, a perpetual grad student, an artist, an experimental chef, a glass blower, a human statue, a viola player, a mad scientist, a tree surgeon and an astronaut, but still somehow finds time to appear in several films a year, from blockbusters like next year's "Oz The Great and Powerful" to indies like "Lovelace," in which he'll cameo as Hugh Hefner.

Between his acting career, university studies and vast array of other artistic ventures, multi-hyphenate James Franco has made several directorial efforts in recent months, including a film about actor Sal Mineo, an 'SNL' documentary, and the upcoming "Francophrenia" premiering in Rotterdam. He's also got some ambitious feature efforts in the works including an adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's "Blood Meridian" and William Faulkner's "As I Lay Dying." But before he follows through with any of those, Franco has his Hart Crane biopic "The Broken Tower" ready for your eyeballs.

We're not sure that there was a bigger surprise this year than "Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes." A tired franchise, from a creative-interference-happy studio, with a green director and a plot straight from "Deep Blue Sea?" Even without the initially unpromising trailers, it looked like a late-summer flop. But happily, it was nothing of the kind: the film became easily the warmest-received blockbusters of the summer, launched director Rupert Wyatt onto the A-list, and has taken an impressive $400 million haul; not bad for a film that allegedly cost less than many of its tentpole competitors. A franchise was (re)born.
