Labor Day, Kate Winslet ,Josh Brolin
Short of helming a "Smurfs" sequel, it's tough to imagine writer-director Jason Reitman going for a greater change of pace than he has with "Labor Day," a full-immersion exercise in the old-fashioned women's weepie that skews far closer to Nicholas Sparks' brand of contrivance than Diablo Cody territory. Give him credit for breaking with trademark satirical impulses so completely that counting the laughs in his self-penned script — based on a 2010 Joyce Maynard novel — doesn't require two hands. But the (sorry) laboriousness of the plot's romance-novel machinations ensures there'll be at least a few dry eyes in the house.

One of the more interesting side gigs among filmmakers these days is Jason Reitman's occassional live readings of famous scripts. The format is pretty straightforward: he picks a script he likes, rounds up a bunch of starry friends and then hosts a live performance with the cast embodying the various roles, and reading it live on stage. “The Breakfast Club,” “Shampoo,” “Reservoir Dogs,” “The Princess Bride,” “The Big Lebowski,” "The Apartment" and "American Beauty" have all been given new interpretations, but his latest choice might be his most intriguing yet.

It's not a Toronto International Film Festival without Jason Reitman (his father Ivan of "Ghostbusters" fame is on the committee, of course). The director, who has had most of his features debut at the festival (aside from "Young Adult"), had tweeted some question mark suggestions about TIFF earlier in the week that some took as hints that he had completed his just-finished "Labor Day" drama starring Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin. That was not to be as expected (c'mon guys, the thing just wrapped a few weeks ago and is coming out in the summer of 2013). Instead, Reitman revealed he was orchestrating another one of his popular live readings series which thus far have included "Reservoir Dogs," Billy Wilder's "The Apartment," "The Breakfast Club," "The Princess Bride," "Shampoo,"and "The Big Lebowski" (the concept: contemporary actors doing stage readings of the original screenplay in front of an audience).

It’s been thirteen years since the release of Sam Mendes’ Academy Award-winning directorial debut, which screened at the Toronto International Film Festival following its Hollywood premiere. And now “Juno” and “Up in the Air” helmer Jason Reitman will host a live reading of Alan Ball’s screenplay this Thursday at the festival.

Tobey Maguire's career in recent years resembles a guy who won the lottery. Between 2002 and 2007, the period of the three Sam Raimi-led "Spider-Man" films, the now-37-year-old actor only worked on two films in between the trilogy -- "Seabiscuit" and the supporting role in "The Good German." Post "Spider-Man 3," the actor has all of three credits on screen. The voice work he did for "Beyond All Boundaries," his severely underrated performance in Jim Sheridan's "Brothers" and "The Details," a Weinstein Company indie that was shown at Sundance in 2011 which the studio is apparently releasing this fall via their VOD Radius shingle.

With "Young Adult" barely out of our minds, lensing is excitingly already underway on Jason Reitman's next directorial effort, an adaptation of Joyce Maynard's coming-of-age story "Labor Day." The project has now added a trio of talent with Alexie Gilmore ("World's Greatest Dad"), Lucas Hedges ("Moonrise Kingdom") and Brooke Smith ("Grey's Anatomy") all joining in unnamed supporting roles. The story centers on an escaped convict (Josh Brolin) who is taken in by a depressed single mother (Kate Winslet) and her teen son (Gattlin Griffith) over a Labor Day weekend with Clark Gregg, Tom Lipinski, Maika Monroe, Brighid Fleming and James Van Der Beek also co-starring. It was a magical evening at the New York Times Center last night for those lucky enough to be in attendance, for at long last Jason Reitman brought his “Live Read” Series to NYC. The series began about 6 months ago when the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) asked Reitman if he had any ideas for programs. His idea was a simple one: to stage readings of classic screenplays live on stage and one-time-only for an audience of a few hundred people. As he told the NY Times recently, “I’d done table reads for my own screenplays, and I always thought they were so much fun. [So I thought], ‘Why couldn’t we do these for other classic screenplays and bring them to life?’ You can experience live theater, where you get to see plays produced by different directors and different casts, but there’s really nothing like that for movie scripts. The great words in these screenplays were really only heard one way, the way they existed in that one film.” The cast for each reading is kept secret until well after tickets have sold out and in some cases until the night of the event, which only adds to the excitement.

If we had to pick one grossly underrated film from 2011, definitely high up on our collective list would be Jason Reitman's "Young Adult." And if we had to pick one criminally undervalued performance from 2011 that deserved to score an Oscar nomination but didn't, Charlize Theron's dark, raw and funny turn in this brilliant and bittersweet picture would be right up there as well. So two pretty strong reasons why you should catch up on this film if you missed it earlier in the year, not to mention we described it in our review as "unflinchingly funny and painful" and gave it an A-grade to boot.

Going into “Young Adult,” Jason Reitman’s new dark comedy, you kind of already have a sensation that Charlize Theron is going to dazzle you as the boozy, emotionally stunted author of a series of young adult novels who returns to her hometown in an effort to woo a former beau.
