Dallas Buyers Club
It's 1986, just months after Rock Hudson's death brings AIDS to its biggest public attention yet, but as far as Ron Woodruff (Matthew McConaughey) is concerned, the real tragedy is the number of Hollywood babes the legendary actor could've easily bedded if he was straight. Along with cocaine, booze and whatever else can give him a good time, sex is an addiction for the Texas man, who seems to have been born with a cowboy hat on his head, a Budweiser in his hand and one eye constantly on the opposite sex. He's a good ol' boy and hustler, playing for and betting on anything. His rundown trailer is merely where he lays his head between the bar, his work as an electrician and wherever else his adventures might take him. But lately he's been getting rail thin, coughing a lot and even passing out. It's only after a freak electrical accident on a work site that he winds up being seen by a doctor, and a brief high voltage jolt is the least of his problems. He's got HIV, and he's given 30 days to live.

Best Physical Transformations
As we move deeper into the awards campaign season, a glut of films with showy central performances are hitting our screens, “For Your Consideration” for Academy voters. Over the years it’s been the subject of many a comedy sketch that there are a few markers of an Academy-friendly role, and this week’s “Dallas Buyers Club” (you can read our review here) is pretty much lousy with with them: it’s based on a true story, deals with AIDS and features not one but two instances of actors undergoing rapid and dramatic physical transformation to play their parts.

It's look like Jean-Marc Vallée's time is coming. Ever since breaking out with "C.R.A.Z.Y." in 2005, the Canadian filmmaker has been edging his way into Hollywood, helming the somewhat underrated "The Young Victoria" and of course, this fall's awards season contender "The Dallas Buyers Club" starring Matthew McConaughey. Next up, he'll be behind the camera for another true story tale in "Wild," with Reese Witherspoon slated to lead, and he's already lining up his next gig after that.

Credit where credit is due; it appears that Matthew McConaughey is done starring in mediocre paycheck fare. After spending years taking off his shirt and smirking through films like "Ghosts Of Girlfriends Past," "Fool's Gold," "Surfer Dude" and "Failure To Launch" (while failing to launch a franchise in "Sahara" and doing forgettable dramas like "Two For The Money"), the actor is striking out in some new directions. His upcoming flick, "The Lincoln Lawyer" seems to be getting better than expected advance buzz and he's lent his name to a couple of bold upcoming comedies, William Friedkin's "Killer Joe" and Richard Linklater's "Bernie." And now, the actor is circling a strong drama that has been stuck in development hell for years.
