Only Lovers Left Alive
The last film to be unveiled in competition at Cannes this year is also one of the most anticipated: Jim Jarmusch's "Only Lovers Left Alive." A last-minute addition to the competition (presumably the print will still be wet, as it were, hence its late screening), it sees the idiosyncratic indie helmer assemble a superb cast including Tom Hiddleston, Tilda Swinton, Mia Wasikowska and Anton Yelchin, for a film that promises to be that rarest of things; a fresh take on the vampire movie.

When Jim Jarmusch's "Only Lovers Left Alive" was missing from the initial lineup announcement for the Cannes Film Festival, we were a bit bummed out, but about a week later, it was slotted as a late addition to the Competition lineup, adding another great title to an already stacked slate. There hasn't been much thus far from the movie itself, with the excitement resting solely on the cast (Tilda Swinton, John Hurt, Mia Wasikowska, Anton Yelchin, Tom Hiddleston) and the fact that it's about vampires. But now, two clips from the movie have landed providing the first look at 'Lovers,' but it remains intriguingly enigmatic.

Oh hell yes. As if the Cannes Film Festival lineup this year wasn't stellar enough with Nicolas Winding Refn's "Only God Forgives," the Coens' "Inside Llewyn Davis," James Gray's "The Immigrant," Alexander Payne's "Nebraska" and more all headed to the south of France, now one more title we had predicted would make it in -- and were bummed not to see in the initial announcement -- is coming.

So the 2013 Cannes lineup has finally been unveiled and as usual, there were a fair few surprise inclusions, a fair few snubby exclusions/category decisions, and some mildly oh!-inducing title changes. The majority of our firm predictions made it in (the Coens, Soderbergh, Farhadi, Sorrentino, Gray, Refn, Denis, Coppola among others) but sometimes into surprising sections, while a couple of films we had down as possibilities or longer shots paid off. So now that we know the lineup from G ('Gatsby' -- opening film) to Z ("Zulu" -- closing film) -- and it's a fairly U.S.-friendly list for Jury President Steven Spielberg to preside over -- lets dive right in and talk about the more eyebrow-raising moments from this morning's announcement.

But prodded by his friends looking for an excuse to party, a booze and babe filled birthday celebration ensues that manages to put his entire future at risk.

There's no one in independent film quite like Jim Jarmusch, one of American cinema's most idiosyncratic filmmakers. Born to Episcopalian parents in Ohio in 1953, the director fell in love with B-movie double bills his mother left him in as a child, and fell into counter-culture arthouse movies in his teens. The director studied Journalism at Northwestern before dropping out and studying literature at Columbia, moving to Paris for ten months and then returning and applying to the film school at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, where he worked under legendary "Rebel Without A Cause" director Nicholas Ray, who encouraged the filmmaker's unique, particular approach.

Given how long this film has been brewing, we'd been worried that like so many projects, it might be stuck in development hell or have trouble finding financing. But the good news is that Jim Jarmusch's vampire film "Only Lovers Left Alive" is still happening, and has added one more name to the already fantastic cast.

Summer is around the corner which means that with the cold weather a distant memory, people are going to want to spending their time outside in the sun and warmth while it lasts. Which likely means less time sitting at home watching movies. So perhaps with that in mind, The Criterion Collection is keeping it easy on the new titles for July, but they do have one new offering, a box set and healthy handful of Blu-Ray reboots.

While "Hunger Games" fans implore anyone who'll listen that it's totally different from the "Twilight" franchise, they can't deny that Lionsgate is following the Summit playbook. The marketing rollout is pretty much targeting the exact same demographic in almost the same way (epic story combined with feelings), and that goes right down to the soundtrack as well. While the film is just over a month away, no final tracklist has been revealed yet, but the pieces are starting to come together.

Barring die hard fans of Kenneth Branagh TV show "Wallander," a year ago, not many could have picked Tom Hiddleston out of a line-up. But having been selected by Branagh to play Loki in "Thor," the young British actor's gone from strength to strength; playing opposite Rachel Weisz in Terence Davies' "The Deep Blue Sea," cropping up among the ensemble cast of Steven Spielberg's "War Horse" and, in a few short months, reprising Loki as the villian in the hotly anticipated superhero team-up flick "The Avengers."
