“Captain America: The Winter Soldier” Anthony and Joe Russo
“Captain America: The Winter Soldier” may not be the Russo Brothers’ first film but with the reception they’re getting from Hollywood, it might as well be. All it took was a $96 million opening weekend to break the sibling-filmmakers out of the comedy and sitcom ghetto—“Community” and “Arrested Development,” notwithstanding—they’d been a part of for most of their career and now they’re some studios’ top choices for new franchises.

Captain America 2, Best/Worst
This past Friday, after opening worldwide a few weeks earlier and performing like gangbusters, "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," the ninth Marvel Studios movie to date, arrived in the U.S., and swiftly proceeded to be the biggest opening of 2014 to date, smashing April records with a hefty $96 million weekend. That's a big step up for the second adventure to topline Chris Evans' super-soldier Steve Rogers to date, no doubt helped by very positive reaction from fans and critics alike.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier
He might not be a space Viking or a talking raccoon, but Captain America was almost as tricky a character to bring to the screen in the 21st century as some of his Marvel contemporaries — standing for sincerity and purity in an age of grittiness and irony, and wearing the stars-and-stripes in an age when international box-office is key. As such, the character's first appearance in 2011's "Captain America: The First Avenger," is probably best described as a modest success, both critically (an enjoyably retro first half giving way to a flatter, more formless second), and commercially — at $370 million, it's the second lowest-grossing of the Marvel pictures so far.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Marvel already knows "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" is going to be a success, and back in January, they started development on the inevitable third movie, rehiring directors Anthony and Joe Russo for "Captain America 3." And as you might expect, with press rounds beginning for 'The Winter Soldier,' the sibling directors will be asked about the next installment, but anyone looking for details might be disappointed as they're still figuring it all out.

Anthony & Joe Russo, Captain America 3
We bet even directors Anthony and Joe Russo, back in their "Welcome To Collinwood" days (see above), couldn't have imagined that a decade later, they'd be behind the camera of the one of the biggest franchises going. Yup, the pair are delivering "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" to cinemas this spring, and clearly, Marvel like what they've done with their first tentpole because they want more.

“Captain America: The Winter Soldier”
"I don't think Marvel's ever done anything like this,” Chris Evans recently told Empire about “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.” "The [directors, the Russo] brothers said right from the start that we were really doing a '70s thriller," the action star said of what sounds like an unlikely Marvel movie.

And then there was one....well, actually two. After a shortlist emerged this spring featuring F. Gary Gary, George Nolfi and the somewhat outside choice of Joe and Anthony Russo as contenders to direct the sequel to "Captain America: The First Avenger," it looks like Marvel has made its selection.

...and then there were two. It was just over a week ago when it was announced that Marvel was looking at George Nolfi ("The Adjustment Bureau"), F. Gary Gray ("Friday," "The Italian Job") and Joe and Anthony Russo ("Welcome To Collinwood," "You, Me & Dupree") for "Captain America 2" (which has since landed a April 4, 2014 release date). Well, it looks like one name is out of the running.

Guessing who Marvel are going to pick to direct their movies is increasingly becoming a fool's errand. We could see why Jon Favreau and Louis Leterrier were picked to helm "Iron Man" and "The Incredible Hulk." But since that opening salvo, they've mostly shied away from A-list names and those experienced with action, with names like Kenneth Branagh, Joss Whedon and Shane Black being picked out to helm "Thor," "The Avengers" and "Iron Man 3."
