The Olympics are here, and aside from the expensive, overblown spectacle, there are sports happening and advertising too. Lots of it. And some of it, with some directors you might have heard of.

It was a long, eventful road that John Hillcoat's adaptation of Matt Bondurant's "The Wettest County In The World" took into production, but the Nick Cave-scripted, Prohibition-era drama -- now titled "Lawless" -- will finally hit theaters on August 31st with a star-studded cast in tow. At the heart of all the action and drama is the youngest of the three Bondurant brothers, played by Shia LaBeouf, who finds himself front and center for the film's latest poster.

Well, this is a curious bit of marketing from The Weinstein Company for John Hillcoat's "Lawless." Although, considering the wonky campaign for "The Road," this is becoming par for the course for Hillcoat's films.

For fans of Australian helmer John Hillcoat, it’s been a long wait since his last film, the adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's novel “The Road” in 2009. However, it looks like patience has paid off with his latest film, “Lawless,” which tells the tale of the Depression-era Bondurant brothers whose successful bootlegging operation in Franklin County, Virginia is soon threatened by authorities who are looking to cut their profits. Based on the novel “The Wettest County In the World” (which the film was originally titled), written by Matt Bondurant—grandson of one of the main characters in the novel—"Lawless," penned by famed musician and screenwriter Nick Cave, had its world premiere at Cannes last weekend. The film was received with a significant amount of praise, with our own writer saying “as far as top-tier storytelling goes, it doesn't get much better than this.”

It takes a fair amount of talent to appear in a film alongside practiced scene-stealers like Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman, Jessica Chastain, Mia Wasikowska, Jason Clarke and Shia LaBeouf. But of course, as audiences have been aware of for getting on two decades, since he came to attention in "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert," Guy Pearce is possessed of an unusual amount of talent.

Perhaps consider this a bit of a spoiler post, at least musically. So if you want to go in blind to John Hillcoat's prohibition drama "Lawless," we suggest you divert your eyes now. For the rest of you still with us, man, the soundtrack to "Lawless" is just one more reason to get excited for the film which lands on August 29th. By now you know it boasts an incredible cast including Tom Hardy, Jessica Chastain, Guy Pearce, Mia Wasikowska, Gary Oldman, Shia LaBeouf and Jason Clarke. You also know that the score was written by longtime Hillcoat collaborators Nick Cave and Warren Ellis, who wrote the haunting scores for "The Proposition," "The Road" and "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford" (the multi-hyphenate Cave, an author, also wrote the "Lawless" screenplay).

Australian filmmaker John Hillcoat has steadily built upon his career as an auteur known for brooding and unnerving pieces of work ever since his neo-western “The Proposition” started making the rounds in 2005. The picture offered viewers a refreshing take on the western genre, and a haunting tale of a crooked lawman who apprehends a notorious outlaw and gives him just nine days to take the life his older sibling or see his youngest brother executed.

While many still know Nick Cave best for his work as a musician in groups like The Birthday Party, and especially for albums such as Let Love In and Tender Prey that he produced along with his band The Bad Seeds, Cave has become increasingly more visible in the world of cinema ever since he first started collaborating with filmmaker John Hillcoat on the helmer’s 1988 feature “Ghosts…of the Civil Undead.”

Twenty fours months and a hot new producer can change everything. It had names like Shia Labeouf, Ryan Gosling, Amy Adams, Scarlett Johnasson and Michael Shannon attached, but circa January 2010, John Hillcoat's "Lawless," then known as "The Wettest County" or "The Promised Land" had fallen apart.
