In his seminal book "Making Movies," Sidney Lumet wrote, "I've done two movies because I needed the money. I've done three because I love to work and couldn't wait anymore. Because I'm a professional, I worked as hard on those movies as on any I've done. Two of them turned out to be good and were hits." As with any freelance job, few filmmakers are in full control of their destiny -- they're at the behest of what they're offered, what they can actually get made, and, even once a film is in production, any number of factors that can make the difference between a creatively successful or creatively lacking film.

How are studios making their decisions these days? Very, very carefully. That's certainly true over at Warner Bros. who this year alone have iced "Akira," are moving very tentatively on "Arthur & Lancelot" (which seems to be on hold), passed on the sprawling "The Dark Tower" and let go of "The Imitation Game." And now they are sending a hit musical packing as well. Jon Favreau's "Jersey Boys" has been put into turnaround.

Two guys whose careers both took a bit of a bruising in the summer of 2011 with two tentpoles that were critically reviled and underperformed, are teaming up for a project that will hopefully see them reversing their fortunes together.

Jon Favreau was making the press rounds for his new J.J. Abrams-produced world-without-electricity television series "Revolution," but Crave Online, wisely acknowledging that talking about "Revolution" is kinda boring, instead quizzed the "Iron Man" director about his plans for "Magic Kingdom," the Michael Chabon-penned project that would combine mythology from both the Disney films and the Disney parks. While Favreau says not to expect the film anytime soon ("Jersey Boys" will definitely shoot beforehand), he is getting some heavy duty help in the form of Pixar's vaulted Brain Trust (which has included Pete Docter, Brenda Chapman, Michael Arndt, John Lasseter, Brad Bird, and Andrew Stanton, at various times).

Before directing the blockbuster “Iron Man” films Jon Favreau was primarily known to the public-at-large as an actor with stints in the hugely popular sitcom “Friends” as well collaborations with his buddy Vince Vaughn. And while he’s set to start prepping the big screen adaptation of the hit musical “Jersey Boys,” the “Swingers” star/writer has cleared enough time in his schedule to make an appearance in Martin Scorsese’s “The Wolf Of Wall Street.”

Marvel Studios, and in particular the “Iron Man” franchise, have a long and storied history with Comic-Con and Hall H. Nearly all of their films have had a presence at the show, oftentimes debuting footage shot only days before the convention. “Captain America” famously debuted an impressively polished reel two years ago after only one week of shooting.

While the modern movie musical has been an unpredictable mixed bag ("Mamma Mia!" a hit, but retro "Rock Of Ages" and classic-feeling "Nine" flopped), it seems Hollywood still thinks there is money to be had. And they are hoping stage success can translate to movie audiences (though again, that didn't mean a thing for "Rock Of Ages").

Ever since "Cowboys & Aliens" kinda tanked hard last summer, there haven't been many directorial projects linked to Jon Favreau. Aside from the brewing "Magic Kingdom" (which itself seems to have stalled out), Favreau kept busy directing the pilot for the J.J. Abrams produced series "Revolution" and taking on a few acting gigs in "Iron Man 3," "Identity Thief" and the forthcoming "People Like Us." But it looks like another supersize project could be his if it all works out.

Well, pilot season is just around the corner and the networks are beginning to unveil their clips and trailers hoping to start getting some buzz brewing about their newest offerings. But the reality is that of the shows that make it to air, many won't last past a season, but if there is one person you can't count out it's J.J. Abrams. As a writer/producer he's been behind massively successful shows like of "Lost," "Alias," "Felicity" and "Fringe," and his latest show, "Person of Interest," was recently renewed on CBS (though "Alcatraz" was canceled). But his track record is strong and his latest venture, the high concept, sci-fi-ish drama "Revolution" has the ingredients of another hit.
