Snowpiercer
In case you’re not a totally dialed-in geek for this one, a battle has been raging in the press for several months over a movie that few journalists have actually seen. That film is South Korean auteur Bong Joon-ho’s upcoming sci-fi graphic novel adaptation, “Snowpiercer,” featuring an international cast that includes Chris Evans, Tilda Swinton, John Hurt, Jamie Bell, Octavia Spencer, Alison Pill, Ed Harris, Ewen Bremner, Korean actors Song Kang-ho, Ko Ah-sung and many more. And the drama percolating over the last few months has been pitted as a classic David and Goliath story of art versus commerce.

They say a good compromise is one where no one leaves the table happy, and that probably best describes the truce reached between The Weinstein Company and director Bong Joon-Ho. After months of rumor, anger and speculation that saw the filmmaker's fans, key cast members and the director himself lay public their displeasure about Harvey Weinstein's rumored plans to cut "Snowpiercer" by twenty minutes and add voiceover, the good news is that the director's cut of the film will get a U.S. The bad news? It might not play a theater near you.

Is Harvey Weinstein finally getting the message? Over the past few months, mostly internet based fury has centered around Bong Joon-ho's apocalyptic thriller "Snowpiercer," and Harvey Weinstein's wishes to take his cinematic switchblade to it. The director himself was said to be privately "furious" about having to cut his film, while Chris Evans, Tilda Swinton and screenwriter Kelly Masterson have all expressed their varying degrees of dismay at the movie being potentially chopped up. But it seems this whole saga may have a happy ending.

As we continue to wait for his battle with The Weinstein Company over the cut of "Snowpiercer" to be resolved, Bong Joon-Ho isn't sitting idly by waiting for Harvey to call. Instead, he's boarded a plane and headed to Argentina where the filmmaker is sitting on the international competition jury of the Mar Del Plata International Film Festival, but he isn't just there to watch movies. The director will also have a retrospective program of his films with "Barking Dogs Never Bite," "The Host" and "Memories of Murder" all set to screen, with another one of his movies getting a unique makeover.

With cast members Chris Evans and Tilda Swinton, along with screenwriter Kelly Masterson (in addition to the rest of the internet) airing their concerns about a potentially edited version of Bong Joon-ho's "Snowpiercer" getting a U.S. release (as well as in a strong handful of international territories), the filmmaker has yet to address his battle with Harvey Weinstein over the edit or his movie. Until now. The folks over at Twitch have managed a chat with the filmmaker who opens up about what kind of changes he's being asked to make, and how things have played out so far.

Chris Evans, Snowpiercer
No matter the extent to which director Bong Joon-ho is collaborating with Harvey Weinstein on cutting his sci-fi thriller “Snowpiercer” (our review) for U.S. release (now pushed to 2014), it's clear he's hasn't let the hold-up slow him down for future projects. The start of this month saw Bong discussing his next likely directorial effort “Okja," a U.S. and Korea-set film about “a very unique woman,” and now he's settling into a producer role for a project that brings together some of his former collaborators.

What are you doing this weekend? Just the usual right? Getting groceries, paying bills, catching up with "Top Chef"... But if you're Quentin Tarantino, and you find out that Bong Joon-ho will be appearing at the Busan International Film Festival, well you can just get on a plane and drop by. And that's just what he did. Already in the region, taking home a statue earlier in the week at Macau's Huading Awards, he popped on over to Busan afterward. And he wasted no time in praising the Korean filmmaker, participating in an interview with the filmmaker at the fest.

Bong Joon-Ho Snowpiercer
While The Weinstein Company outlines exactly what manner of compromised cut they will inflict upon Bong Joon-ho and his upcoming “Snowpiercer,” we can't blame the director for wanting to move swiftly on to his next project and away from frustrating negotiations. Luckily, the talented filmmaker is flooded with potential follow-ups—having pondered offers from within Korea as well as Hollywood—and while he seems confident on which one will likely be next, Bong is eager to scale down tremendously for it.

Bong Joon-Ho Snowpiercer
Back in August some news surfaced to the horror of Bong Joon-ho fans everywhere; that The Weinstein Company were looking to slice and dice his upcoming "Snowpiercer" by upwards of twenty minutes. While many collectively freaked, the director himself at first remained diplomatic on the matter, calling the changes "pretty soft," even as cast members Chris Evans and Tilda Swinton were a bit more vocal about their worries. But now it seems the gloves are officially off, and those looking forward to the apocalyptic thriller have genuine reason to be concerned.
