Video Game Revolution feature
If you’re sick of the wave of comic-book movies over the last few years, you’d better brace yourself: the video game movie is coming, and it’s coming for you. The end of last week saw the announcement that another attempt is being made to ramp up zombie game “Dead Island” as a movie: originally in the works with Lionsgate back in 2011, the project’s now set up at Occupant Entertainment, which is co-producing alongside the game’s creators, Deep Silver.

10 Exciting Big Studio Director Transitions On The Horizon
Back in March, we unveiled a list of one-time indie directors who suddenly made the jump to hyperspace with blockbuster projects, and their associated blockbuster budgets. That piece noted that this was “a trend that’s become increasingly prevalent over the last decade or so” and sketched out some of the budget boosts these film-makers were getting, often having 5 or 10 times the budget of their previous film dumped in their laps by the studios, with a range of results.

Our Kind Of Traitor Susanna White
You might remember that last year, and early this year, there were all kinds of rumblings and activity around the John Le Carré adaptation of "Our Kind Of Traitor." Justin Kurzel, the Aussie director behind the unnerving "Snowtown," had signed to direct, with Ewan McGregor attached to star, while names like Jessica Chastain, Mads Mikkelsen and Ralph Fiennes were all tossed around as potential cast members, with a 2014 shoot in mind. Well, that start date still seems to be in mind, but it looks like there's been a switch behind the camera.

Over the past few years it seems that we’ve seen more and more omnibus films, from arty travelogues (“Paris, je t’aime”) to horror (“The ABCs of Death”). What sets “The Turning” apart, however, is that it’s an adaptation of the Tim Winton novel of the same name. While we’ve already seen a teaser for the film, and now a full length trailer has arrived for the effort.

Out damned spot, out I say! A little while back, Natalie Portman signed on to play one of literature's most, uh, supportive spouses, Lady Macbeth in a new film version of Shakespeare's play "Macbeth," to be directed by Justin Kurzel, the Australian helmer who broke through with the deeply grim serial killer picture "Snowtown." But with Portman gearing up her directorial debut "A Tale Of Love And Darkness," it seems that something had to give, but Kurzel's traded one Oscar-winner for another in her place.

For those of you who have been reading us for a while, you might remember that way back in the day, we did a two part feature on omnibus films, and basically it boils down to this: by their very nature, with numerous directors and actors taking part, it's very rare for these kinds of movies to work as a whole. Some segments will be great, while others will miss the mark, but the ambition is always admirable. Which is why we're keeping an eye on "The Turning," a movie we nearly forgot about.

Everyone from Sam Worthington (really) to Orson Welles has taken on "Macbeth," and the Shakespeare play that dare not say its name has been adapted countless time for the stage, television and multiplex. Well, when it comes to the cinema, (quality) movie versions have been a bit fewer and farther between, so the news that Michael Fassbender might take the lead in "the Scottish play" certainly has our attention.

Though born in New Zealand, Andrew Dominik, the director of this week's "Killing Them Softly," moved to Australia at the age of 2, and was raised there. And around thirty years later, he provided a firecracker up the arse of the nation's film industry by directing "Chopper," a biopic of colorful criminal Chopper Read that made Eric Bana a global star, and firmly launched Dominik as a filmmaker to watch.
