There was a time when Kenneth Branagh was best known for his Shakespeare adaptations, but he's always had a tentpole heart it seems. Going all the way back to 1994's "Frankenstein," which seemed like an anomaly at the time, he's shown a knack for big screen spectacle, and after helming "Thor" he took the gig directing "Jack Ryan." Unlikely? Maybe, but once again, Branagh is ready to play with a lot of money and special effects.

Jack Reacher. Jack The Giant Slayer. Jack Harper....we're getting a whole lot of Jack this year. And as 2013 wraps up, there will be another one in the form of "Jack Ryan," a reboot of sorts of the Tom Clancy character last seen on the big screen over a decade ago, played by Ben Affleck in "The Sum Of All Fears." Well, now Chris Pine is taking the mantle, and a couple new images from the upcoming blockbuster have arrived.

So, this is the bad guy in "Jack Ryan"? A businessman? We guess if he needs to do some evil, there's probably an app for that... on his now old and thus completely obsolete iPhone 4. Maybe he's calling on one of his minions to get in line to buy the new one.

The thing about Jack Ryan on the big screen is that, from a purely visual standpoint at least, there’s nothing that really distinguishes him as Jack Ryan. He could be any number of movie characters, and that’s rare for a character that Hollywood are willing to build a franchise around. So when we get a look at pictures from the set of a Jack Ryan film, if they didn’t come with descriptions attached we’d be tempted to simply peg them as ‘Chris Pine wearing a sweater while riding a motorpike’ or ‘Chris Pine standing next to Kevin Costner’. Well get ready, because you’re about to be blown away by ‘Chris Pine wearing sunglasses AND talking to Kenneth Branagh’.

Wait, are they really calling the movie formerly known as "Moscow," and then "Untitled Jack Ryan Movie" plain old "Jack Ryan"? Is this movie about an accountant who can find a way to get you even bigger return next year? What about something like the badass titles of yesteryear like "Clear And Present Danger," "The Sum Of All Fears," and "The Hunt For Red October"? Bleh. Let's hope this is just a holding pattern and that Paramount change their minds, but anyway, the movie has a release date.

So, Jack Ryan is finally coming back. The long-developing movie, formerly titled "Moscow" and now generically known as "Untitled Jack Ryan Reboot" or whatever, is actually headed into production with Kenneth Branagh directing and playing the villain, Chris Pine in the lead role, Keira Knightley as his wife and Kevin Costner as the man who recruits and trains the agent. And with screenwriter David Koepp recently telling ComingSoon that shooting begins in two weeks, Paramount is ready to place this thing on the calendar and starting thinking franchise.

Review: Danny Boyle's Witty, Subversive & Spectacular Opening Ceremony For London 2012 Olympics Was A Triumph

We're not known for our love of sporting events here at The Playlist, but ever since it was announced that Danny Boyle would be the man in charge of the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics (following in the footsteps of "Hero" director Zhang Yimou, who shepherded the Beijing events), we've been intrigued. After all, Boyle, as a recent Oscar winner for "Slumdog Millionaire," is a serious A-lister now, and could get any film he wanted made. And while he's kept his oar in, shooting thriller "Trance," with James McAvoy, last year (he'll finish post-production on it once the Olympics are done), it did mean giving over a year or so of his life to the event at a time when he's never had more cachet.

Well, this is an interesting development. While we have to admit, the prospect of another Jack Ryan movie initially didn't thrill us, this bit of news has certainly raised our interest, adding an interesting element to the film that will find recently signed director Kenneth Branagh doing double duty on the project.

While "Thor" will move on without him, Brit multi-hyphenate Sir Kenneth Branagh (yep, he was knighted this week) has certainly been kicking around plenty of other directorial efforts, including an adaptation of Henning Mankell's "Italian Shoes" with Anthony Hopkins and Dame Judi Dench, "The Guernsey Liteary And Potato Peel Pie Society" with Kate Winslet and an adaptation of Shakespeare's "Macbeth" as well as recently boarding the long-gestating Jack Ryan reboot with Chris Pine.

“The Counselor,” the first original screenplay by Cormac McCarthy, is set to begin shooting in just a few short weeks with Ridley Scott at the helm. The film follows the titular character (Michael Fassbender) who ventures into the world of drug dealing with deadly consequences, and it features a stellar cast including Javier Bardem, Cameron Diaz and Brad Pitt. In a conversation with Empire at Cannes, Pitt dished on his excitement about the project, saying, “I’ve read every word [McCarthy’s] published and most of them more than once. So this was a chance to do something of his and also work with Ridley again.”
