Nymphomaniac Trailer
It seems with each passing day the plans are changing for Lars von Trier's provocative sex epic "Nymphomaniac" (which dropped a raunchy trailer last week with plenty of NSFW moments), and in particular, his preferred edit. Word emerged earlier this month that the version of the film heading into release in Denmark and Norway next month and in France in January will run 4 hours long—90 minutes shorter than the director's cut—playing in two parts. Shortly after that, producer Peter Aalbæk Jensen seemed put it on von Trier's shoulders as to the fate of the longer cut, saying, "...it belongs entirely to Lars von Trier to show his personal version, why not in a large festival or in a DVD or Blu-ray Collector's Edition?" But it now seems von Trier's 5 1/2-hour version will see an official release.

Nymphomaniac, trailer
And we all thought “Antichrist” was fucked up—sexually, emotionally and psychologically. Though Lars Von Trier did a moody left turn with his operatic depression comedy “Melancholia” (hear me out—the first half with the wedding from hell is hilarious... the rest, admittedly not so much), it’s entirely possible “Antichrist” was just a warmup for his latest movie, the four-hour (maybe 5.5 hrs one day) “Nymphomaniac,” which, at least from the trailers, proves that Von Trier has not mellowed with age and isn’t done challenging or terrorizing his audiences.

It's not a Lars Von Trier movie without some kind of controversy but this time around, it's not necessarily the content of his upcoming "Nymphomaniac" that's at issue. Rather it's the stuff that isn't going into the movie. It was about a week ago we learned that the official release of the film arriving in Denmark and Norway next month would be a four-hour cut, unseen by Von Trier that would still contain the hardcore sex he shot (as opposed to a separate softcore version that had been rumored—a concept that has since been ditched). Even more, while reports circulated that a XXX cut would play Cannes next spring, they were swiftly denied by producers. So what is the status of Lars Von Trier's five-and-a-half-hour director's cut? Well, that's up to him.

Is Lars von Trier's sex epic "Nymphomaniac" getting taken away from him, or are we in the middle of a delicate dance between commercial prospects and artistic integrity? We'd wager it's the latter rather than the former at the moment, but it would seem for the first time in his career, the provocative director is finding his voice somewhat muted. Reports circulated yesterday that Lars von Trier's reported 5 1/2-hour cut of the movie is being whittled down to 4 hours for the Danish release of the movie, and indeed it's a decision being made in the interest of financial viability.

So, how do you market a reportedly 5 hour long sexytimes epic drama? Well, so far the people behind Lars Von Trier's "Nymphomaniac" have done a tremendous job of building buzz for the movie online with a series of provocative teasers, but rolling things out to theaters presents a different challenge. For the Danish release, the powers that be have decided to cut the movie by an hour to make things a bit more commercially viable.

15 Weird & Disturbing Sex Scenes
Let’s get this out of the way, right off the bat: there will be mild spoilers here—but these spoilers have already been posted online and not by us. Got that? I mean, we all read the Internetz, so… Anyhow, Ridley Scott’s “The Counselor” opens in theaters this weekend. Written by venerable American author Cormac McCarthy, “The Counselor” stars Michael Fassbender, Penélope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, Javier Bardem and Brad Pitt as its principal cast. The picture is a morality drama about a greedy lawyer (Fassbender), who finds himself in over his head when he decides to delve into the dark world of drug trafficking. Shit backfires and things go way south for said attorney.

With all the excitement over the fall festival movies, it's easy to forget that we're only a matter of months away from the unveiling of Lars Von Trier's latest. Or at least, it would be if not for the canny stream of information that comes out of "Nymphomaniac." Even if it weren't for recent revelations -- a total running time of five hours for the two-part film, a potential TV spin-off, a premiere for the hardcore version at Cannes -- Von Trier's been keeping up interest for his new film by releasing a clip every month in the run up to the Christmas premiere in Denmark of the first part.

As the monthly teasing continues for Lars Von Trier's sex odyssey "Nymphomaniac," there continues to be one surprise after the next when it comes to the film. We've already learned recently that the two-part film may run as long as five hours, and that a TV spinoff is apparently in the works. But could Von Trier's latest be his ticket back onto the Croisette after being deemed persona non grata in 2011?
