It's possible you may have not noticed it, but three-time Academy Award nominee Lasse Hallstrom has become an immensely prolific director. Though he was Miramax's go-to guy in the late nineties and early aughts, that company's significantly lower profile led to him moving in another direction. But he rebounded with a flourish, scoring his second biggest hit with the Nicolas Sparks' adaptation "Dear John", and now he's back with the romantic comedy "Salmon Fishing In The Yemen".

It’s an age-old story: Directors establish themselves abroad, then Hollywood's doors swing wide and virtually no one is impervious to her lucrative charms. More often than not, they’re chewed up and spit out (George Sluizer, Oliver Hirschbiegel) or they flourish and slowly but surely lose their original aesthetic (Paul Verhoeven).

No author since perhaps Danielle Steel has served as the foundation for such a run of increasingly wishy washy movies, but at least those were mostly made for TV. "Message In A Bottle," "A Walk To Remember," "The Notebook," "Nights In Rodanthe," "Dear John" and "The Last Song" have all be made from the works of Nicholas Sparks, the Mad Lib author who has a found a good formula that more or less remains unchanged with each book. So who better to deliver his latest batch of pablum than Lasse Hallström who has already tackled the author's material before with "Dear John."

When Swedish director Lasse Hallström ("What's Eating Gilbert Grape?" "The Cider House Rules") announced he would be directing the Sweden-set crime thriller “The Hypnotist” this year, we asked, ok, what did this mean for Nicole Kidman's Blossom Films' developing transgendered drama “The Danish Girl”?

We've already expounded on the career of diminishing returns from director Lasse Hallström, but perhaps a trip back to his native Sweden for his first film in twenty four years will be the creative rejuvenation he needs.
