Over the past decade, SXSW has turned into one of the countries most exciting showcases for feature films and shorts as well as the programs for music and interactive. So consider this something of a milestone that one of the most exciting premieres to take place at the Paramount Theatre this year was not a film at all but the first three episodes of a new HBO series. The event was the first time the cable juggernaut had utilized the festival as a showcase for one of its shows and though one might have guessed a sneak peek of the new season of their fantasy epic “Game of Thrones” would be an easy lay for the geek-centric crowd, instead the network decided to put their big promotional push towards “Girls,” a new comedy from writer/director/star Lena Dunham. This actually makes sense because Dunham premiered her first two features at the fest which included her breakout, “Tiny Furniture,” which won the prize for Best Narrative Feature. "Girls" revolves around the relationships between 4 college friends - Hannah (Dunham), her best friend Marnie (Allison Williams), hipster princess Jessa (Jemimi Kirke), virgin Shoshanna (Zosia Mamet) - and their trials and tribulations working, dating and living in NYC.

Sorry haters, Lena Dunham has arrived and there's not much you can do stop her. The budding writer/director/actress broke out with "Tiny Furniture" and earned the wrath from dorky The Criterion Collection purists who were galled when the label dared to select her film. But credit to Dunham, who has just soldiered on ignoring the backlash. She went on and teamed up with super producer Judd Apatow, and the result is the upcoming HBO series "Girls," the first three episodes of which completely won over SXSW crowds (we called it "beautiful and brilliant"). So while you wait until April 15th for the show to arrive, you can take a quick trip back in time to see the early work that helped Dunham find her voice.

As far as young independent filmmakers go, writer/director Lena Dunham has been the subject of an excessive amount of conversation and handwringing, even by the admittedly loose standards of the ever-chatty Internet age. Her first feature, "Creative Nonfiction," was accepted to South by Southwest and the follow-up, "Tiny Furniture," won the Best Narrative Feature award at the same festival. That film also managed to attract quite a bit of attention, with comedy world luminaries like Will Ferrell and Judd Apatow singing its praises and some comparing her confessional, no-nonsense style to the early work of Woody Allen.

Lena Dunham, who won many hearts and minds with her 2010 debut feature "Tiny Furniture" (headed for the Criterion Collection soon), will soon be exposing her self-affacing brand of awkward humor to a much bigger audience when her television series, "Girls," executive produced by some dude named Judd Apatow, hits HBO next year. Last night, during the "Boardwalk Empire" finale/"Luck" sneak peek pair of brilliance, HBO debuted a short teaser for the series. And we've got to say, we're cautiously optimistic.

With lensing set to gear up soon, Judd Apatow is beginning to pad out the cast of his untitled "Knocked Up" spinoff, which is also known as "This Is Forty." The film will star Leslie Mann and Paul Rudd, who are reprising their roles Debbie and Pete, in the picture that will follow their relationship five years after the events of the preceding movie. Megan Fox and Albert Brooks are also on aboard and continuing to mix old and new faces, four new names have been announced.

'Certified Copy' Considered "Minor Kiarostami," Errol Morris Docs & Wim Wenders' 3D Dance Pic 'Pina' RumoredLena Dunham arrived in a huge way when her debut feature film -- which she wrote, directed and starred in -- premiered at SXSW last year to strong buzz and reviews. While not everyone was head over heels for the film -- our man on the ground at IFFBoston sort of hated it -- Dunham quickly got the attention of Hollywood. She's teaming with comedy producer extraordinaire Judd Apatow on a comedy series for HBO, while Scott Rudin has tasked her with adapting "Dash and Lily's Book of Dares." So huge things are on the horizon for Dunham, who now appears to be a force to be reckoned with in Hollywood, and The Criterion Collection seem to agree.

The second-to-last hurrah of the movie season took place this afternoon, with the Independent Spirit Awards, the looser neighbor to the big Oscar show tomorrow night. And while it's unlikely "Black Swan" will repeat the feat on Sunday, Fox Searchlight must be very pleased to close off their year in such a winning a fashion.
