A Reliable Wife Luca Guadagnino
It's been five years since Luca Guadagnino delivered the heady and swooning "I Am Love," and while he's been working steadily since on various fashion campaigns, shorts and documentaries, there hasn't been much movement on a feature film. Now it looks like he's ready to return, with another tale of domestic trouble.

While Luca Guadagnino hasn't helmed a narrative feature since 2009's sublime "I Am Love," he's nonetheless been keeping himself busy. This year he dropped the documentary "Bertolucci On Bertolucci" at the Venice Film Festival and he's helmed a variety of fashion and design-centric shorts including "One Plus One" for Giorgio Armani and "Here" for Starwood Hotels, co-written by Tilda Swinton, scored by Jason Schwartzman and starring Agyness Deyn. Now the director has tackled another mini-project, this time for Salvatore Ferragamo.

James Ellroy is pretty much the finest American crime novelist working, whose muscular, spare novels have long since made him countless fans not just among fans of the genre, but also more literary-minded readers. But in terms of screen adaptations, things have been more mixed. There was of course, "L.A. Confidential," one of the finest American films of the 1990s, and Ellroy wrote the first draft of last year's gripping cop drama "Rampart." But other adaptations, from 1987's James Woods vehicle "Cop" to Brian DePalma's atrocious "The Black Dahlia" have been disappointing.

Hot on the heels of the announcement that spooky Isabelle Fuhrman will headline David Gordon Green's long-discussed but now-actually-happening "Suspiria" remake, comes word that several more actors have joined the cast. In a piece about French production company Wild Bunch's Cannes slate, ScreenDaily reports that international treasure Isabelle Huppert has joined the cast of "Suspiria" alongside Janet McTeer, Michael Nyqvist and Antje Traue. This cast is already scary good.

While we patiently await Luca Guadagnino to get rolling on this followup to "I Am Love," if he keeps knocking out lush advertising work like this, it will certainly help tide us over. Last month, he dropped "Here" a short movie/advertisement for Starwood Hotels that starred Agyness Deyn and was written by Tilda Swinton and Sandro Kopp, and scored by Jason Schwartzman and while this latest venture is not quite as starry, it's still worth a look.

Yes, the merging of the worlds of cinema and advertisting isn't exactly new, with directors and actors frequently earning a bit of extra cash helming a commerical or fronting a campaign for a fashion. But rarely do we seen the kind of talented that has been assembled for the short film "Here," essentially a fifteen minute bit of hotel and costume design porn Starwood Hotels.

Foreign Oscar Nominees Talk Their Process And How They Avoid The (Melo)drama We recently had the opportunity to sit in on a panel at the American Cinematheque with some of the best foreign film nominees at last month's Golden Globes (and 2 that have gone on to become Oscar nominees): Luca Guadagnino, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Susanne Bier and Aleksei Uchitel (Radu Mihaileanu, director of "The Concert" was still on a plane coming in from France). Moderating the panel was Screen International Editor, Mike Goodridge, who led a fascinating discussion that in the end, came to about 2 hours. While we haven't recreated every word for you here, we have a few choice moments that captured the theme of the afternoon: working outside of one's cultural comfort zone, and finding the truth in that storytelling.
