Robert Pattinson’s clout-building continues in 2014 though it technically has barely begun. Pattinson’s post-“Twilight” career rehab started with David Cronenberg’s “Cosmopolis” and the film world took notice. Auteurs, perhaps needing a viable start to greenlight their projects, took notice too. Werner Herzog came knocking (“Queen Of The Desert”), James Gray (“The Lost City of Z”), Cronenberg again (“Maps to the Stars”), Anton Corbijn ("Life") and many others. One of the earliest adopters was Aussie filmmaker David Michôd who quickly cast him in “The Rover” opposite Guy Pearce.

Laggies
Since her breakout film “Humpday” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival five years ago, writer/director Lynn Shelton has been one of the hardest-working women in the business. In addition to her last two features—“Your Sister’s Sister” and “Touchy Feely”—she has also directed episodes of “New Girl” and “Mad Men.” Her films are complex and touching explorations of human relationships and, until now, they have mostly been improvisational works developed with talented ensembles of actors.

Laggies Ben Gibbard
A little bit of related Sundance music news rolling in this afternoon. Two well-known modern musicians—one an indie-rocker, the other a now-seminal hip-hop artist—are plying their trades to some new films making their debut in Utah later this January. First up is Death Cab For Cutie frontman and ex-Mr. Zooey Deschanel, Ben Gibbard. The singer/songwriter's first foray into solo film scoring was for the 2006 documentary "Kurt Cobain About A Son" and now he's dipping his toe in the waters once more for Lynn Shelton's "Laggies."

2014 is here but that doesn't mean the tabulating of 2013 will end just yet. Everyone is still using the holiday season to catch up on the year that was before jumping into the year ahead, and yet another Top 10 is upon us.

Touchy Feely Rosemarie DeWitt
There's a strange and opaque energy coursing through the veins of Lynn Shelton's languid fifth feature-length effort, "Touchy Feely." It's a little mysterious, to the film’s moody credit, and it’s a little unavailable and removed, to its detriment. Lead actress Rosemarie DeWitt admitted, "I didn't really understand the character when I read the script," in the post Sundance Q&A. "But then I told her I didn't understand her either," Shelton explained. And not only does this sentiment ring true, it’s this mild inscrutableness that muddies this often compelling, occasionally sublime, but ultimately uneven family drama about energy, connections (missed or otherwise) and healing.

Lynn Shelton
A different form of improvisation is felt in “Touchy Feely,” the fifth feature from Lynn Shelton; instead of the loose outlines and dialogue of the director’s recent films (“Your Sister’s Sister,” “Humpday”), it’s the film’s subjective and technical experience that feels crafted on the spot and cemented in the editing room. We follow two siblings -- masseuse Abby (Rosemarie DeWitt) and introverted dentist Josh Pais – as they adjust to their surroundings following an unexplained shift in personal energy, and Shelton achieves this through use of micro closeups, swirling sound effects, and an exploratory pace.

Hey-o cinephiles, and welcome to the deluxe edition of Stream This. There was a lot to cover this week, with so many films being released on VOD concurrently or in advance of their theatrical debuts, and we didn't want to leave anything out, including those nifty themed picks. Thus, the result at hand: an extra-long version of the column, where we give you eight suggestions instead of six. (Don't worry, you won't have to buy special sheets or anything.) There's work from Brian De Palma, Paul Schrader, and Lynn Shelton to name a few, and all of it is either playing or will be playing shortly on a silver screen near you. In related news, James Ponsoldt's third film, "The Spectacular Now," opens this weekend to much critical praise from Sundance on down, so if you're looking to brush up on his canon, an earlier work is available to stream. Plus there's a largely forgotten Mark Wahlberg picture from the early 2000s to honor the "2 Guns" star while reminding us why we like artist formerly known as Marky Mark so damn much. And now, for our streaming picks of the week.

Premiering at Sundance earlier this year, "Touchy Feely" was a movie that didn't quite connect with us (read our review). That being said, this new trailer for the movie reminded our reviewer of the great moments contained within, and this cast is certainly worth seeing in any movie, no matter what.

When Christopher Nolan or his associates call, you pick up the phone, and Rebecca Hall certainly did, joining Nolan Cohort Wally Pfister's directorial debut "Transcendence." but that left Lynn Shelton with a bit of a problem. She needed a lead for her upcoming "Laggies," which Hall had been circling, but the director soon landed Anne Hathaway. But again, the gravitational pull of the Nolan juggernaut meant that didn't quite work out either, as she went on to do Nolan's "Interstellar."

It's exciting at the moment to see some of the names who broke out of the independent scene in the middle of last decade -- the filmmakers often lazily grouped under "mumblecore," people like Mark and Jay Duplass, Joe Swanberg, Ry Russo-Young, et al. -- getting to play on bigger canvases with big name actors and more robust budgets than when they were starting out. And it's particularly exciting when it comes to Lynn Shelton.
