Lynn Shelton is nothing if not prolific. Since her 2006 feature debut "We Go Way Back," she's made five films, and since "Humpday" became a crossover hit, she's only gotten busier; that film was followed by "Your Sister's Sister" in 2011, and barely a year later, she was back with another feature, "Touchy Feely," which premiered at Sundance back in January. And in between all of that (plus occasional cameos in the likes of "Safety Not Guaranteed" and "Prince Avalanche"), she's become an in-demand TV director, with her work including episodes of "Mad Men," "Ben & Kate" and "New Girl."

So is Lynn Shelton having her Joe Swanberg moment? The mumblecore directo recently pivoted toward the mainstream with "Drinking Buddies" starring Olivia Wilde, Jake Johnson, Anna Kendrick and more, and while Shelton last delivered "Your Sister's Sister" featuring Emily Blunt and Rosemarie DeWitt and "Touchy Feely" with DeWitt and Ellen Page, her latest lines up an Oscar winner, a rising young actress and more and what could definitely be a project that will help her reach her widest audience audience yet.

When indie filmmaker Lynn Shelton moved forward with her latest effort "Touchy Feely" which stars Rosemarie DeWitt, Scoot McNairy and Ellen Page among others, we had presumed the worst for "Laggies," the Andrea Seigel-scripted relationship tale Shelton was set to tackle next. Thankfully, it looks like that project has merely been shifted rather than removed from Shelton's calendar and it now has a Hollywood comedy stalwart on board.

Independent filmmaking has become somewhat hyper-obsessed in the last few years with "realism." Lighting rigs have been put away, available light filling in where it will, and scripts tossed out for sketches, shaped by improvisation in an attempt to capture as close to an approximation of real human interaction as possible. It's an admirable approach, and not just limited to "mumblecore" movies -- Terrence Malick has followed this path pretty closely throughout this career. However, the risk in this style is that if it's too loose, it can structurally crumble the emotional and narrative focus. And for "Humpday" director Lynn Shelton's "Your Sister's Sister," that's the unfortunate result of the ten day shoot on the film that gathered together a game cast -- Emily Blunt, Rosemarie DeWitt and Mark Duplass -- and sets them loose on a good dramatic premise, unfortunately ill-served by a far too casual approach.

A new Lynn Shelton movie appears to be brewing out of nowhere, while the latest from Gus Van Sant and Matt Damon has added an actor, and at the center of it all is rising "Monsters" star Scoot McNairy.

Indie filmmaking stalwart Lynn Shelton -- who made a splash with "Humpday" a couple of years ago -- isn't in any particular hurry to go the studio route. Sure, she's helmed an episode of "Mad Men," but even her next film -- which flirts with Hollywood in casting Emily Blunt, Rosemarie DeWitt and Mark Duplass -- is a low-budget, semi-improvisatory affair. And while that film is gearing up for a TIFF premiere, Shelton is already lining up her next effort.

Even the most casual dabbler in Internet jokes have seen the ad at the bottom of this piece, a baffling classified entry that holds infinite potential for a good story (and apparently 834509 memes). However, aspiring screenwriters better minimize their pirated Final Draft because filming has already begun in Seattle on "Safety Not Guaranteed," the movie inspired by the ad that's being directed by Colin Treverrow from a script by constant cohort Derek Connolly. After working in some smaller TV production and movies, the Duplass brothers have taken the two under their wing and seem to have wrangled the right kind of talent.

With Rachel Weisz signing on for a number of projects all shooting within the next short while, we figured at least one of them was going to get left in the dust.
