And so, as the western "Jane Got A Gun" heads into post-production, the main conversation about the movie still remains around what exactly happened when Lynne Ramsay abruptly left the movie at the 11th hour. Her sudden exit caused a flurry of changes in casting and of course, in directing, with Gavin O'Connor ultimately stepping in to guide the movie and bring it over the finish line. But it seems there are still plenty of hurt feelings to go around.

While Lynne Ramsay's exit from "Jane Got A Gun" earlier this year, followed by some casting switcheroos, was no doubt a headache for all involved, the focus at the time seemed to be on getting the picture made. Producers quickly snared Gavin O'Connor ("Warrior," "Pride & Glory") to take over and the movie was shot this summer without incident. But of course, the whole story about what went down before cameras rolled has yet to be told. For her part, Ramsay has remained mum about those events, though reports suggested she was battling for final cut, however a new lawsuit suggests her behavior on the movie was far from professional.

20 great Debut/female directors
One of the less reported stories of this August’s film schedule is that the month not only saw three films released that were directed by women, but they were in fact three feature debuts — Lake Bell’s “In A World” opened to a rapturous reception (including ours) on the 9th, Jerusha Hess’ “Austenland” bowed the following week, and this Friday Jill Solloway’s “Afternoon Delight” begins its run (our review is here). One swallow, or even three, may not make a summer, but these green shoots must certainly be promising for those in favor of changing the current female:male ratio in the film directing profession (which runs at 1 to 15.24 in the U.S. according to a Sundance Institute report) to a number that isn’t so outrageously out of whack that you have to keep double checking it. Yep, it’s 1:15.24.

In past years, the jury for the main slate at the Cannes Film Festival has tended to mix in a few bigger names -- Alexander Payne, Tim Burton, Robert De Niro, Jude Law -- with smaller filmmakers, producers and more. But it looks like the 2013 jury is going to be the starriest in years, and you might be forgiven for thinking you bumped into a table at the Oscars.

The Swimmer Lynne Ramsay
Well, here's one name we didn't expect to figure so prominently at Cannes this year -- Alejandro Jodorowksy. The 84-year-old director will not only have his first feature in over twenty years unveiled, but he will also be the subject of a documentary that is sure to get cinephiles very, very excited.

Filming might have got underway, but the dust is still settling on what was undoubtedly the biggest news story of the week: "We Need To Talk About Kevin" director Lynne Ramsay seemingly walking out of her latest film, Western "Jane Got A Gun" on the first day of production, before a frame had been shot. She was swiftly replaced by "Warrior" helmer Gavin O'Connor, but actor Jude Law followed Ramsay out the door, leaving stars Natalie Portman and Joel Edgerton without a villain (though Jake Gyllenhaal, Tobey Maguire and Jeff Bridges are apparently being courted).

Getting fired, quitting a job hastily, "mutually agreeing" to exit...no matter how it's phrased, being removed from any project is never fun as almost anyone who has ever worked a day in their life can attest. The recent debacle with “Jane Got A Gun” -- director Lynne Ramsay was a no show for work on the first day of filming apparently having clashed with the producers -- is an unfortunate peg with which to take a look back at filmmakers who were fired, replaced or walked off a film, but history is full of interesting tales of films gone awry thanks to the regrettable loss of a film’s director.

We were beginning to wonder, as 24 hours had nearly passed, but yet another update has arrived in the ongoing saga of the western "Jane Got A Gun." The film, which this week saw director Lynne Ramsay and star Jude Law quit the project, while "Warrior" director Gavin O'Connor has been hired to try to get this thing moving, is still without a villain. The project, now looking to fall a week behind schedule, is in search for a replacement, and a few names have cropped up as possible substitutes.

So, if somehow you've been away for the past 24 hours, here's what's been going on: Lynne Ramsay bailed on the western "Jane Got A Gun" on the first day of production yesterday, only to be replaced by "Warrior" helmer Gavin O'Connor this morning, with plans to start shooting tomorrow. Well, they'll have to scrap those plans as the project has lost another major talent.

With Lynne Ramsay shockingly and mysteriously bailing on western "Jane Got A Gun" yesterday, producer Scott Steindorff of Scott Pictures promised a director would be found imminently. He wasn't kidding. Less than 24 hours later, the film has a brand new helmer to get the movie going, and likely keep any delays minimal.
