You know how we know that 2011 is a good year for cinema, despite the shocking dearth of decent movies in its first seven months? Because we got Lynne Ramsay back. The British director made a storming debut with "Ratcatcher" in 1999, and went on to make one of the best films of the aughts with "Morvern Callar," but almost a decade has passed since, with Ramsay spending much of the time developing her take on "The Lovely Bones," only to be chucked off when Peter Jackson decided he wanted to make it -- and we all know how that turned out.

Filmmaker Says The Period Working On 'The Lovely Bones' Was A "Horrible Time," Calls The 2009 Version "Absolutely Awful"Contrary to popular belief, Playlist writers are not always on the same page, but one recently (re-)acclaimed filmmaker does bind most of us. Coming off her triumphant return with Cannes-approved hit, the psychological motherhood horror, "We Need to Talk About Kevin" -- which looks like one of the two or three current Palme d'Or frontrunners and could likely earn Tilda Swinton the Best Actress prize -- Ramsay is finally back in the saddle (read our Cannes review here).

It has been almost a decade since Lynne Ramsay's "Morvern Callar," and while some of that time was spent on an adaptation of "The Lovely Bones" that was scuttled (with Peter Jackson later delivering his take on the material to theaters), we're glad she's finally back. Next month she'll hit Cannes with "We Need To Talk About Kevin" another tough drama that promises to be a doozy.

What a helluva ride it's been for fans of decent music over the past Sunday evening and Monday morning. First, Arcade Fire take home the Grammy for Album Of The Year, trumping a host of favored (and frankly, shitty) acts. Radiohead announces a new album -- "The King Of Limbs" -- this morning that is already on pre-sale and be released digitally this forthcoming Saturday and now, THR reports that Jonny Greenwood will be taking on the scoring duties for Lynne Ramsay's upcoming drama "We Need To Talk About Kevin." Awesome.

2011 is quickly shaping up to be an exciting year for female-driven/directed pictures, with a wealth of great, intelligent options for people that are frankly sick of the overtly male-dominated market (or Katherine Heigl). Multiplexes will see Kristen Wiig lead an ensemble of funny ladies in "Bridesmaids," art house cinemas get Kelly Reichardt's dustbowl period piece "Meek's Cutoff," festivals continue to be graced by Slamdance-winner "Without," and hopefully the online community will see a glimpse of the Linda Cardellini war movie “Return” (hint hint), which has been compared to "Safe" and "A Woman Under The Influence.” Yowza.
