Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes
Sometimes America makes the right choice at the multiplex, and we're certainly not talking about the bonkers opening for "Transformers: Age Of Extinction." Instead, this past weekend moviegoers gave a vote of confidence to Matt Reeves' smart and accomplished "Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes," putting it in the pole position. That certainly means Fox will be ready to make a third entry in the series (indeed, they've already dated it for 2016) and 'Dawn' ends with Jason Clarke's Malcom warning Caesar that the military are on the way. In short, the apes battle for survival has only begun.

Dawn of the Planet Of the Apes
Tribalism, the rise and fall of civilizations, broken brotherhoods and the tragic failure to coexist: these are not the familiar ingredients for a summer tentpole movie. And yet here they are in Matt Reeves’ well-considered, thoughtful and morally complex, “Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes,” a summer blockbuster that considers a lot of ambitious ideas, successfully arranges them and yet never at the expense of scope, spectacle and drama. We could probably see hundreds of blockbusters like these and not get tired of them. They are every reason we go to the movies: for escapism, but also to have a piece of art reflect back a little piece of humanity back at us. And Reeves' movie does that in spades.

Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes
Biting sharply into Michael Bay’s box-office hegemony, 20th Century Fox’s “Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes” took the #1 spot this weekend with an extremely healthy $73 million opening. That’s up around 33% from 2011’s “Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes,” a surprise hit that veered very close to $500 million worldwide. A lot of components factored into its success: extremely positive reviews, great word of mouth, little competition — and considering Matt Reeves’ sequel is darker, more adult, and nowhere near as “crowd-pleasing” as the average blockbuster (at least not in the traditional sense), this is a great sign for Fox and the lifespan of this franchise, especially when a A- Cinemascore means audiences were very satisfied. Couple that with weak box-office competitors next weekend (“Sex Tape,” “The Purge” sequel), its possible ‘Apes’ could remain at #1 next week and or at least continue to do considerable business for the next few weeks (its $73 million gross is higher than the 14 films combined in the box-office top 15 this week).

Ranked: Planet Of The Apes Movies
By now, unless you're totally deaf to advance buzz or have been living on a Luddite commune for the last few weeks, you’ll be aware that Friday’s “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” will open wide with a great groundswell of critical approval behind it (you can read our own extremely positive review here). Whether that will translate into box office is anyone’s guess, but the omens are in its favor: ‘Dawn’ seems destined to benefit from strong word of mouth, especially around Andy Serkis’ motion-capture performance, the trailers have been playing like gangbusters (even if their violence sparked complaints during the World Cup) and most importantly, it’s the sequel to the remarkably successful “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” which itself took nearly half a billion dollars worldwide.

Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes
In the new cynical, cash-grabbing sweepstakes to manufacture polished, all-appealing four quadrant blockbusters— specifically engineered to reap hundreds of millions of dollars, of course— 20th Century Fox’s “Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes” sequel is of a rare, rare breed. It’s the genuine article, an engrossing tentpole with serious themes, complex moral conflicts and emotional stakes, and one that doesn’t feel as if it was written by committee or structured around big and familiar action set pieces. And it’s one that executes on all its lofty ambitions from minute one with nary a false note. In truth, the deeply absorbing and thematically rich ‘Apes’ sequel is more akin to a drama than an action film, but it's one that still satisfies the desires and demands of big, blockbuster filmmaking.

Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes
If you'll recall, at the end of "Rise of the Planet of the Apes” all hell broke loose. After a fierce battle on the Golden Gate bridge, the apes went "home" to the tops of the Redwoods outside San Francisco, But one of the characters was infected by one of the experimental drug and the ending showed a graphic tracing the spread of the humanity-killing virus to Europe and then around the globe via international airline flight routes. Got all that? That set up the sequel “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” directed by Matt Reeves, which takes place 10 years later.

Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes
Making his feature film directorial debut with the found footage "Cloverfield," and then turning heads with his excellent remake of "Let Me In," Matt Reeves' career so far has been spent confounding expectations. And that's why, even with the gig of helming a blockbuster sequel, we have hopes that "Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes" isn't just your average tentpole. And even with the pressure of delivering for his first, big budget studio gig, Reeves remains pretty excited about the opportunity that has landed in front of him.

Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes
There's a fair old gap between the world that we saw in 2011's "Rise Of The Planet Of the Apes'—basically like ours, but with more superintelligent primates—and the one that's been glimpsed in the footage so far from this summer's sequel, "Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes." Things, quite frankly, appear to have gone to shit, with San Francisco now an overgrown wilderness, and the few humans left forced back into, essentially, the dark ages.

Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes
So, what can you expect from "Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes"? We'll let director Matt Reeves explain. "We've got apes on horses," he told USA Today. "There is a sense in the beginning of the movie that apes have inherited the Earth. You see the species as it takes dominion over the planet. It's an ape-world. That's the fun of it."
