An hour or so ago, most of the moviegoing world had their eyes on the trailer premiere for Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln," tipped by many to lead to Oscars for both the director and its star, Daniel Day-Lewis. And yet at the same time, last year's Best Director Academy Award winner, and one of only five living actors with as many gold statues as Day-Lewis, were sneakily making plans for a film that looks like it could be a future awards juggernaut, and may be bringing along a recent Best Actress winner too.

'The Artist' Director Michel Hazanavicius Eyes Former Dayton/Faris High-Concept Comedy 'Will'

Way back in 2010 we wrote about "Will," a clever script by Demetri Martin that was then looking like the follow-up to "Little Miss Sunshine" for directors Valerie Faris and Jonathan Dayton. Back then it starred Paul Rudd and Zach Galifianakis as characters living in a world devoid of free-will, with every moment of your life is preordained by "angelic scribes." Of course things change when Will (who would've been played by Rudd), turns 34 and finds out that his life has opened up and that he's actually free to do whatever he wants. Adam McKay and Will Ferrell were set to produce through their Gary Sanchez shingle and then… nothing. Dayton and Faris ended up making this year's terrific "Ruby Sparks" and "Will" was never heard from again.

As Harvey Weinstein crawls on hands and knees up the Croisette, searching desperately for the next film to equal the success of last year’s golden child, “The Artist,” it can be hard to recall just how unique and singular the film seemed when first shown at Cannes, before its subsequent release and obnoxious awards season buzz. The plain fact is, director Michel Hazanavicius & Co. made a tremendous film, and today news has sprung up that the cast and crew will continue to pursue interesting projects, ones that find them in a distinctly different environment than before.

'The Artist' Sweeps Spirit Awards Taking Best Picture, Director, Actor & Cinematography

The awards season train continues for "The Artist," and while in years past the Spirit Awards have tended to honor edgier or more decidedly independent fare, this year it looks like even they have the fever for the silent movie sensation. Taking home the big prizes for Best Picture, Best Director (Michel Hazanavicius), Best Actor (Jean Dujardin) and Best Cinematography (Guillaume Schiffman) it looks like the stage has been set for the film to repeat these honors, and maybe more, tomorrow night at the venue formerly known as the Kodak Theater.

Finally, the Oscar nominations were announced last Tuesday. Furthermore, three of the four big guilds -- the Producers, the Director's and the Screen Actors -- have given out their awards over the last couple of weekends, with only the Writers still to hand out any statuettes. So at last, months and months down the line, we can stop talking about what's going to be be nominated, and start talking about what's going to win. Or at least who's leading the field at this point.

Director's Guild Of America Names 'The Artist' Helmer Michel Hazanavicius Outstanding Director Of The Year

It's a decade since the winner of the Director's Guild of America award went on to lose the Oscar -- Rob Marshall picked up the DGA prize for "Chicago" in 2002, only to lose out to Roman Polanski for "The Pianist" at the Academy Awards. Two years before that, DGA winner Ang Lee was beaten by Steven Soderbergh. In the last forty years, only four in total (the others being Steven Spielberg for "The Color Purple" and Ron Howard for "Apollo 13," neither of whom even picked up Oscar nominations) have won with the Director's Guild without picking up the Oscar.

Oscar nomination ballots close today, and it's looking increasingly likely that French surprise contender "The Artist" will pick up the most nods, with nominations looking all but certain for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography, and half-a dozen other categories. While it may not have seemed like it right away, it turns out the sleeper Oscar contender this year might just be "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo." Initially regarded as a pulp thriller and a bit of holiday season counterprogramming, the film has quietly been building steam, with some strong critical buzz, a steady pace at the box office which will likely see it take $100 million domestically, and Sony is already eyeing getting the sequels underway by the end of the year (though, Fincher will likely be moving on).

When you're the helmer and star of a near-universally beloved sleeper hit, with Oscars virtually in the bag, it's one of the few scenarios (bar a billion dollar hit) which means your next project can be pretty much whatever you like. The offers roll in, of course, but you have enough kudos that you could ask for $50 million to film a biopic of Shirley Temple, starring Edward James Olmos, and someone would step up to fund it.
