Kevin Smith Jersey Girl
After a brief time where it seems he lost his moviemaking mojo, Kevin Smith is back and working at a more furious pace than ever. Rather like a hockey jersey festooned James Franco, Smith has several irons in the fire at once with podcasts, TV shows and books, amounting to a mini-media empire. Now, he seems ready to reclaim his director's chair: This fall he'll unveil his horror project "Tusk." As he told a Comic-Con panel this weekend, the movie is the first installment of a trilogy.

Imitation Game
We may be in the sticky heat of July, but eyes are already turned to the awards season. Tomorrow, the Toronto International Film Festival will be unveiling the first titles of their slate, and it will be an interesting window into what the studios will be trotting out as their contenders. And one that is still in play for Toronto (and its competitors) is The Weinstein Company's "The Imitation Game," and the first trailer is here to show you why they paid $7 million for the rights earlier this year.

So just how busy is Martin Scorsese at any given moment? Well, here's a taste: he's currently in post-production on his next feature, "The Wolf Of Wall Street," he's producing a documentary about the late Roger Ebert, working on a movie project about the New York Review Of Books, developing a TV series based on "Gangs Of New York," executive producing new films for Luc Besson and Andrew Lau, and he also signed up to direct a documentary about Bill Clinton for HBO. And this is all stuff that happened in 2013. So is it a surprise that something that cropped up in 2011 might not be happening?

It seems like Benedict Cumberbatch is starting to get a taste for biopics of socially awkward computer geniuses who change the world. The "Sherlock" star is currently filming "The Fifth Estate," in which he's playing Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, and now he's lining up another hot role, in the shape of tragic mathematician Alan Turing.

For fans of the crime genre, both on the page and on the screen, Scandinavia has been the hottest source of new material in recent years (although obviously not literally). Steig Larsson's Millennium trilogy was a huge bestseller worldwide, and has already provided three Swedish films and David Fincher's upcoming remake "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo," while Kenneth Branagh has had great success on TV as Henning Mankell's "Wallander," and Danish series "The Killing" proved a huge hit at home and in the U.K, and was remade on AMC under the same name.
