Neill Blomkamp District 9
Most directors would kill to have the kind of support (personally backed by Peter Jackson) and success ($210 million worldwide, Best Picture nomination) Neill Blomkamp did on this feature debut, "District 9." And some filmmakers might have felt pressured to keep Hollywood in their favor, and undoubtedly, Blomkamp has been asked numerous times since 2009 about making a sequel, "District 10." But he's largely deflected the question, and been reticent about the enterprise, telling us in 2012, "I'm not sure I'm making that film. It would be cool, but these films take two or three years to make, and the investments are so extreme, you can't accurately predict where you'll be a few years from now, I believe. If you're not creatively invested in it, you're making a mistake, and that creative investment happens day to day. So I don't know when that feeling for a 'District Whatever' film happens." But it seems he's at least drafted an idea.

Franchise Compromise Sucks: Neill Blomkamp On Why He Wouldn't Do 'Star Trek' Or Any Other Franchise

Neill Blomkamp,
Franchises and "edgy" visions just don't mix. See Darren Aronofsky's takes on "The Wolverine" or "Batman: Year One" (pre-Christopher Nolan takes), Joe Carnahan and "Daredevil," Joss Whedon's "Wonder Woman," etc. Studios are generally looking for something within the comfort zone of a property. You can be dark -- see Nolan's 'Dark Knight' films -- but you can't be too crazy. This is a tentpole after all and they're designed to reach the maximum number of people. Which is probably why you sadly can't do anything too adventurous with the upcoming "Star Wars" movies. Speaking of that series, that'll obviously be multiple films that will need various directors, when asked about it, "District 9" filmmaker Neill Blomkamp took himself immediately out of the running.

The discussion around product-placement has increased in recent weeks, mostly thanks to "The Internship" which some have called "Google: The Movie." Some of that talk has been a bit overblown, as Vince Vaughn and co. actually approached the company to ask if they could use them, preferring to use a real company as the thrust of the story instead of a fake corporation. Moreover, Google didn't actually produce the movie either, so while yes, their name is everywhere, it's part and parcel of the actual movie and story.

“Star Wars” may be in the hands of J.J. Abrams now, but what will happen in the not-so-far-away future? After all, will Abrams direct an entire trilogy? What about the spin-off films that are in the works? Who will direct those ones? Just when you thought the fan speculation had been struck down, it’s become more powerful than you can possibly imagine. One of the most mentioned directors when it comes to “Star Wars” is Neill Blomkamp. IGN recently caught up with him to test the “Star Wars” waters again and he revealed why he would not want to be a part of the legacy.

Matt Damon, Elysium
The battle to keep surprises in store for an audience versus the need for mass marketing a major tentpole can be a tricky balance, but so far this year it seems studios are wising up. "Iron Man 3" and "Man Of Steel" both had extensive campaigns, yet kept big twists and plot developments under firm lock and key while stoking excitement for these franchise movies. And while we wait to see if Fox pulls a "Prometheus" and eventually ruins "The Wolverine," Sony is showing off a bit more of Neill Blomkamp's original tentpole (a rarity) "Elysium" with a brand new trailer.

As the curtain is being lifted on Neill Blomkamp's forthcoming summer sci-fi "Elysium," another is being lowered over his next effort, "Chappie." Story details on the film are under lock and key, but the cast is already grabbing attention with South African rap duo Die Antwoord slated as the leads in the film, with Blomkamp buddy Sharlto Copley also coming on board. The movie will cost $50 million but aside that morsel, not much else is known about the sci-fi comedy and Blomkamp ain't talking.

While it will wind up being a four year wait between “District 9” and “Elysium” when the latter picture drops this summer, Neill Blomkamp has not wasted much time prepping for his next film, the sci-fi comedy “Chappie.” And while the recent news of South African rap duo Die Antwoord being cast as the leads in the film was certainly a surprise, this particular piece of news should come as no shock to anyone.

As we mentioned earlier today in our giant summer movie preview, "Elysium," Neil Blomkamp's eagerly awaited follow-up to his groundbreaking "District 9," is one of the movies we're most looking forward to this summer. Pitched between social commentary and sci-fi spectacle, the movie envisions a futuristic earth that's ruined and toxic, with the most powerful and wealthy humans living on an orbiting space station called Elysium. As two new photos from the movie show, Earth really has gone to hell.

So, here's a fun trivia fact before we get into this: when David Fincher was on his lengthy search to find the actress to play Lisbeth Salander in "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo," Yo-Landi Vi$$er -- of the South African rap duo Die Antwoord -- was on his list. It was later reported that she was interested in the part or acting in general, but it would seem her mind has been changed on the matter, with the most unlikely of projects.

Elysium trailer
In case you missed it, yesterday evening Sony finally unveiled the long-awaited trailer for "Elysium," Neill Blomkamp's rather ambitious sci-fi follow-up to the dazzling and creative, "District 9." Starring Matt Damon and set in 2154, "Elysium" looks like a direct commentary on "the haves and have-nots." It's set in a future where the ruling class are on Elysium, an elite luxury space station above the planet, while the 99% are stuck on a ravaged and resource-drained Earth, both brutally overpopulated and polluted. And we've got to say: the trailer looks tantalizing and incredible, with some spectacular effects that point to some potential next-level shit.
