Loose, limber and driven by a fierce energy and staccato/pause rhythm we haven't seen previously from this filmmaker, Noah Baumbach's sublime "Frances Ha" is a fresh and vivacious near-reinvention of the director/writer's comedic milieu. An enchanting riff on friendship and the late-20-something right of passage into true adulthood, while the buoyant comedy does focus on those who still don't have their shit together, it is however, leagues more rich and emotionally layered than the average arrested development dilemma that seems to pervade 20/30-something comedies of late.

One of the best pleasant surprises of the initial Toronto International Film Festival announcement this morning? The surprise reveal of a new Noah Baumbach film. While Baumbach, the filmmaker behind "The Squid and the Whale," hinted to us in a recent interview that something was up his sleeve, we didn't imagine it was something we'd be seeing so soon.

So this morning, Variety spilled the beans on the first wave of announcements for the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival, and... boy, it looks like a great year. So much so that we wonder how much is left over for other fall festivals like Venice or Telluride. A few of the most anticipated films won't be world premieres, suggesting that they'll be popping up elsewhere shortly before, but we count 40 films announced so far as world premieres, among them films that are sure to make major waves.

HBO might be turning into something of a safe haven for the kind of smart, adult programming that's increasingly rare in theaters, but not everything gets to make the cut. With shows like "True Blood" and "Game Of Thrones" becoming long-running hits, and newcomers like "Girls" and "The Newsroom" getting second season pickups, there's only so much room on the schedule, and it means that even high-profile shows aren't necessarily getting the go-ahead.

We were pretty much champing at the bit to see "The Corrections," an adaptation of the book by Jonathan Franzen, acclaimed by many as one of the greatest Great American Novels of the last couple of decades. Under the shepherding hand of super-producer Scott Rudin, with a home at quality-factory HBO, writer-director Noah Baumbach ("The Squid And The Whale," "Greenberg"), practically a perfect fit for the material, was bringing it together. And he rounded up a top-flight cast including Chris Cooper, Dianne Wiest, Ewan McGregor, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Greta Gerwig and Rhys Ifans, with the prospect that the show would run for four seasons of ten episodes each.

That internet movie legend is false: filmmaker Noah Baumbach’s debut feature, “Kicking And Screaming,” was never almost accepted to the Cannes Film Festival and then rejected because the director refused to cut fifteen minutes from the film as requested.

Nothing ever truly dies in Hollywood, and even though intel about "Squirrel To The Nuts" dropped way back in the fall of 2010 without much heard of it since, it seems lots has been happening behind the scenes, with the pic now making some giant strides, with three of our favorite filmmakers helping it happen.

After flirting with the mainstream last year in "No Strings Attached" and "Arthur," indie darling Greta Gerwig is firmly back in her usual territory for the next couple of years: the actress will next star in Tribeca Film Festival entry "Lola Versus," has Woody Allen's "To Rome With Love" following in the summer, and just wrapped a reunion with "Greenberg" director Noah Baumbach on the pilot for the HBO adaptation of Jonathan Franzen's "The Corrections."

One of the more mystifyingly popular children's franchises out there is DreamWorks Animation's "Madagascar" series and this is coming from someone who is obsessed with cartoons. Even its central conceit, while appealing, leaves much to be desired (neurotic, city-dwelling animals from the zoo are mistakenly shipped off to far flung reaches of the globe), with most of the characters simply loose ethnic stereotypes and the animation existing in a world of half-assed stylization (some characters exhibit a more cartoony, hard-edged style, with others are realized in typical DreamWorks mediocrity). The fact that they've squeezed three movies out of this thing is amazing in and of itself, but even more baffling is the fact that this third entry, "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted" (woof), was written by Noah Baumbach. And watching this new trailer doesn't exactly illuminate anything.
