Esteemed filmmaker, film critic and journalist Peter Bogdanovich is cinema's biggest namedropper without a doubt, but he's definitely aware of his good fortune. "I know I actually knew all these people," Bogdanovich said in reaction to audience laughter over his ceaseless references, quotes and anecdotes about legendary cinema icons and friends like Orson Welles, Howard Hawks and John "Jack" Ford. "I really did know them, it's amazing. I know, I pinch myself."

While "Mr. Popper's Penguins" will arrive in theaters this weekend with Jim Carrey doing his familiar rubber face schtick, you might remember that at one point "Greenberg" duo Noah Baumbach and Ben Stiller were going to reteam on the film. Unfortunately, they both wound up dropping out but their work survived and when current director Mark Waters was first circling the project he was sent the script they put together. It was pretty out there, and he didn't get it at all.

As we mentioned yesterday, this weekend is the opening of Film Society of Lincoln Center‘s beautiful new facility, the Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center, and opening night featured a candid conversation between the Joel and Ethan Coen and Noah Baumbach (note: the Coens revealed they are working on a new "music-based" film project). The event, called “Opening Shots,” saw all three filmmakers and mutual admirers examining the similarities and differences between the openings of their films. Clips were shown from Baumbach’s three most recent efforts “The Squid & The Whale,” “Margot At The Wedding,” and “Greenberg,” while the Coen’s filmography ran deeper going back to “Blood Simple” but skewing mostly towards their more recent work “The Big Lebowski,” “No Country For Old Men,” “Burn After Reading,” and “A Serious Man.”

With filming set to kick off in June, Noah Baumbach just lost two huge names from his gestating relationship dramedy "While We're Young."

Filming Begins Next SummerWhile we'll always long for the never-made version of "Greenberg" with Mark Ruffalo and Amy Adams, the fact that Ben Stillerand Noah Baumbach are now total besties means that financing probably comes much, much easier for the indie auteur, and if that means he gets more films greenlit, then who are we to complain? It was with much excitement that reports broke earlier in the month that Baumbach was quickly gearing up another film, "While We're Young," a relationship film (shock!) with Ben Stiller and James Franco set to star, and with offers out to both Cate Blanchett and Greta Gerwig. And while we love both actresses, it looks like only one of them will make it to the set.

Offers Out To Greta Gerwig & Cate BlanchettIt seems Noah Baumbach and Ben Stiller are new BFFs. Of course, they teamed on "Greenberg" which hit theaters this spring and for a while, they were both tentatively attached to the family film "Mr. Popper's Penguins" until they both dropped off (the project is now moving ahead with Jim Carrey and Mark Waters). Not only that, Baumbach was tapped to do a quick punch up on Stiller's character in the script for the currently shooting comedy "Tower Heist," so it was pretty inevitable the two would find a film to work on again as director and actor.

Bogdanovich Has Also Finished Screenplay For 'Turn Of The Century'So yes, we're on IndieWire now, which technically means that director and Hollywood encyclopedia Peter Bogdanovich is our colleague (in case you didn't know, he's got a blog), but though we have yet to run into him by the water cooler and ask him if he saw "The Office" last night, it might be because he's been busy working on a couple of new films.

Update: Casey Affleck has also joined the cast playing Stiller's friend and underling who is uncomfortable with the heist plans and wants to turn him in. Judd Hirsch of "Taxi" fame is also in the ensemble. This cast is now officially bonkers.
