The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
I can hear the groans now. It’s kind of amazing the narrative change on Peter Jackson and his expanded “The Lord Of The Rings” hexalogy. The first trilogy, people loved and couldn’t get enough, clamoring for those extended edition DVDs, with more and more footage making for running times that were over three hours for each film. But cut to his new, not-as-well-received ‘Hobbit’ trilogy, and there’s a lot of bemoaning about the similar running times of these movies, in most social spheres.

The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies
So, the final 'Hobbit' movie is coming. After six movies, director Peter Jackson will finally be done with his ‘Lord Of The Rings’ saga (or one assumes, anyhow). And so in this final movie, it’s kill the dragon Smaug and come home as heroes with fortunes in tow, right? Maybe not quite so fast. "People tend to forget what happens at the end of ‘The Hobbit,' " screenwriter/producer Philippa Boyens told USA Today. "They think of this little children's book. The rest of the story needs to be told, and it's pretty intense stuff."

Peter Jackson The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring
Many many epochs past, before claiming its rightful status as the beloved Oscar-winning trilogy known the world over, "The Lord Of The Rings" was planned to be a single movie, directed by John Madden ("Shakespeare In Love," "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel"). Obviously, that didn't come to pass, and Peter Jackson went in the opposite direction.

Viggo Mortensen Throws Shade On Peter Jackson; Says ‘Lord Of The Rings’ & ‘Hobbit’ Films Sacrificed Subtlety To CGI

Viggo Mortensen Lord Of The Rings
If “The Lord Of the Rings” movies were universally beloved with Peter Jackson sweeping the Oscars for “Return Of The King” as a kind of “well done” overall achievement award, then his “Hobbit” films thus far have received possibly the opposite response (or at least a far more divisive one). Jackson’s predisposition for CGI seems to have taken over from practical effects and not only have fans noticed.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies
Because "There And Back Again" sounded too casual and leisurely. Because "Into The Fire," a recent rumored title because Warner Bros. had registered the domain name, will probably just be used for a video game version . Because over $2 billion in worldwide grosses wasn't enough. Warner Bros. announced today they have changed the title of Peter Jackson's third 'Hobbit' movie and have retitled it, "The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies." Does that mean the movie, as Slant tweeted this am will be broken up into "five more excruciating chapters?" Thankfully not, but you can understand the concern.

The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug
Braving the snow, sleet and other miscellaneous travails relating to cold weather, audiences came out in droves for "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug." The second of the three 'The Hobbit' installments (or 'The Lord of the Rings' prequels, cue wincing from Tolkien fans) took the top spot and made $73.7 million for the weekend, which included a strong midnight opening night of $8.8 million, the second best ever for the month of December.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
Peter Jackson’s “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” hits theaters this weekend. It’s either the far better of the two ‘Hobbit’ films thus far, or barely better depending on your point of view (you can read our review here). Originally scheduled to be two films, near the end of production, Jackson and Warner Bros. decided to split the story into three films. Good idea? Bad idea? It’ll be hard to tell until the whole thing is over, but our review suggests, you’re already seeing those growing pains.

The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug
Familiar? More of the same? Does it matter? When it comes to "The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug," part of a billion dollar franchise that will forever spin money into the Middle Earth bank accounts for Warner Bros., it's probably best not to rock the boat too hard. Simply put, all the team has to do is sell an epic adventure, and today they're doing just that.

The Desolation Of Smaug, Hobbit, Legolas
If you didn't have your fill of Middle Earth adventures with last year's "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey," well, you're in luck, because for the next two Christmases we'll be treated with a new J.R.R. Tolkien-inspired odyssey (captured, for some reason, in ultra-fluid 48 fps 3D). The first sequel, "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" (too many definite articles!) will be out this December, and two new TV spots have debuted for the film, which emphasize director Peter Jackson's frantic grasp of action and the connection to the later "Lord of the Rings" trilogy (via Flicks and Bits).
