The Good Lie, Reese Witherspoon
In 2011, Canadian writer/director Philippe Falardeau earned acclaim and an Oscar nomination for "Monsieur Lazhar," a low key but powerful tale that joined an examination of how children cope with death with the story of an Algerian immigrant making a life for himself in Quebec. The buzz around the film and filmmaker finds Falardeau now revisiting those themes on a broader, big budget canvas with "The Good Lie." However, though this film is "inspired" by true events, it lacks the nuance or subtlety of his breakthrough picture. Indeed, "The Good Lie" is so manufactured around a particular dramatic blueprint that any sense of spontaneity, surprise and engagement are sucked right out of the picture.

The Good Lie
With one Oscar under her belt for "Walk The Line," it seems like this year, Reese Witherspoon is really gunning for another statue for her mantle. She already has "Wild" coming from Jean-Marc Vallée, the director of "Dallas Buyers Club," and now she's teaming with another French Canadian filmmaker for another awards-baiting drama, and the first trailer has arrived.

Bounced around development after “Boardwalk Empire” writer Margaret Nagle turned in a buzzworthy script, the based-on-true-events drama “The Good Lie” is finally making its way to fruition, and with some further pedigree attached. “Monsieur Lazhar” director Philippe Falardeau will helm the pic with Reese Witherspoon in the lead, and now you can count two more noteworthy names toward the cast.

South Korean filmmakers Kim Ji-woon and Park Chan-wook are some of the latest foreign filmmakers that have moved into English-language filmmaking – to mixed results – and now Canadian “Monsieur Lazhar” helmer Philippe Falardeau is set to join them with a major star of his own. Variety is reporting that Reese Witherspoon is circling the lead of “The Good Lie” with Falardeau attached to direct.
