Score one for the self-published author. In a bidding war comparable to the recent "50 Shades of Grey" face-off, 20th Century Fox has acquired the film rights for Hugh Howey's self-published, post-apocalyptic e-book, "Wool." Originally started as a stand-alone story in 2011, fervor over Howey's work led to more installments, the first five of which have been compiled into a omnibus edition. Howey self-published "Wool" through Amazon, and, after positive word-of-mouth, sold over 140,000 copies through e-book in just under six months. Not bad for a guy who worked as a yacht captain for eight years before pursuing a literary career (can't make stuff like that up).

We pretty much covered this in the last couple of days, but it's possible we buried the lead a little, plus a press release is out, so it's now official: with "Prometheus" nearly upon us, Ridley Scott has started to seriously work towards his other sci-fi follow up, the continuation of "Blade Runner" that was originally announced last summer. A couple of details have been confirmed via a press release from Alcon Entertainment, among them that Scott is going right back to the well when it comes to nailing down the story for his new replicant-themed picture.

The hopes and prayers of sci-fi geeks and cinephiles were answered yesterday as news officially came in that Ridley Scott's semi-"Alien" prequel "Prometheus" had landed an R-rating, as all four "Alien" movies did before it. The director had been non-committal about what rating he was shooting for, and even notoriously interference-happy studio boss Tom Rothman, in a sign of the new filmmaker-friendly side of 20th Century Fox, had promised that the film would "not be compromised," regardless of what rating it received. And so it came to pass: the MPAA have given it an R for "sci-fi violence including some intense images, and brief language," and it'll be released without a frame cut.
