The hopes and prayers of sci-fi geeks and cinephiles were answered yesterday as news officially came in that Ridley Scott's semi-"Alien" prequel "Prometheus" had landed an R-rating, as all four "Alien" movies did before it. The director had been non-committal about what rating he was shooting for, and even notoriously interference-happy studio boss Tom Rothman, in a sign of the new filmmaker-friendly side of 20th Century Fox, had promised that the film would "not be compromised," regardless of what rating it received. And so it came to pass: the MPAA have given it an R for "sci-fi violence including some intense images, and brief language," and it'll be released without a frame cut.

We couldn’t be more excited about the June release of director Ridley Scott’s sci-fi opus “Prometheus.” After a couple years now of speculating how/if it will fit into the “Alien” canon and a series of near spoilers, we don’t have much longer to wait until we discover the answers to all our questions. This kind of anticipation is something the marketing folks over at 20th Century Fox must be well aware of, as they continue to fan the flames with scraps of enticing promotional material all over the place, making cinephiles and film blogs alike scavengers of the web, much akin to the space jockeys that scrounge up trash all over the galaxy in the “Alien” universe.

The anticipation continues to build for Ridley Scott's "Prometheus," and with a bunch of footage unspooling for international journalists last week, we'll take whatever scraps of info we can get at this point. Images from the world of "Prometheus" continue to dribble online, and Scott himself has noted the film will run about two hours when it's all said and done. So with that mind, the Russian trailer for the movie has dropped online and yes, it's lots of stuff you've seen before along with some brief, mysterious bits of new scenes.

So what do we know about "Prometheus" so far? Well, only as much as Ridley Scott and the cast are willing or able to tell us at this point. We do know that it's about the search for the origin of mankind and our creators -- and things go very, very wrong -- but just what the scope will be, and how that story will play out is tantalizingly still a mystery. So until the movie hits theaters, we'll have to take what we can get. And while Scott hasn't been shy about sharing his frustrations with the MPAA he does say that when "Prometheus" hits theaters, it will be his director's cut.

New Pics From 'Prometheus' Deepen The Mystery

Perhaps the most remarkable thing about the "Prometheus" marketing campaign thus far is that it has managed to be both breathlessly exciting with some of the best cut trailers of the year, but also relatively still deeply mysterious. While the broad strokes of the story are known, just where they will lead is anyone's guess. In an era that now counts teasers for trailers (the worst), motion posters and other novelties as ways to get audience attention, "Prometheus" remains fresh because its approach is almost old school, relying simply on images and trailers to do the work. And now a few more have arrived that deepen the mystery.

Ridley Scott Says MPAA Needs To Get Their "House In Order," Does This Mean PG-13 Rating For 'Prometheus'?

“Right now I don’t know where we are. The question is, do you go for the PG-13, or do you go for what it should be, which is R? Financially it makes quite a difference, or the risk makes quite a difference, and yet you also have to apply the question — if you soften it, will you financially suffer?” director Ridley Scott recently told Empire. “As opposed to just going for the throat and gambling. Essentially, it’s kinda R. The little bastards will still get in anyway, so what’s the difference? It’s not just about blood, it’s about ideas that are very stressful. I’m not an idiot, but I’ll do everything I can to get the most aggressive film I can.” And it seems since that interview, Scott has been in the loop with the MPAA trying to get a rating for his film, and like a handful of directors in recent memory, he's come away with a sour taste in his mouth.
