Oh “Prometheus,” you’re so close, yet so far away! After the debut of the enigmatically beautiful new trailer that made its way online over the weekend, our excitement couldn’t be more fevered. Fox is looking to capitalize on the newfound buzz for director Ridley Scott’s “Alien” prequel/spinoff/whatever by kicking off its marketing blitz in a grand fashion, well ahead of the film’s June 8th release date.

The trailer for Ridley Scott’s upcoming, much-anticipated sci-fi film, “Prometheus” has landed and pardon our French, but holy shit, it’s rather astounding. Christopher Nolan you’re officially on blast and you may need to raise your game for ‘TDKR’ trailer number two.

If you'd like to cynically file this one under "no shit Sherlock," we won't entirely blame you, but hear us out for a second. Way back when "Prometheus" was first announced circa March 2010, it wasn't "Prometheus." Written by Jon Spaihts and conceived then as a full-blown prequel to 1979's “Alien,” when the announcement first arrived, Ridley Scott himself corrected journos that had asked about the prequel during “Robin Hood” press. “Prequels, two films," he stressed, noting both would be shot in 3D but wouldn’t be shot back to back.

Christopher Nolan, the ball is in your court. In what's already been an atypically strong year for big commercial movies ("21 Jump Street," "The Cabin In The Woods," "The Hunger Games"), Ridley Scott's long-awaited return to sci-fi, "Prometheus," just made a very strong case for being, of everything, the big studio movie that we're counting the days for, with the full trailer debuting tonight, just after Scott unveiled it at WonderCon. And it blew our motherfucking socks off.

Of all the summer movies due this year, none, even "The Dark Knight Rises," carry the weight of expectations from cinephiles as "Prometheus." Given that it's the first science-fiction movie in thirty years from Ridley Scott, the man whose previous entries in the genre, "Alien" and "Blade Runner," stand at the very apex. And as a spiritual successor set in the same universe as the former, the stakes for geeks are even higher.

Ever since its surprise announcement a month or so back, "The Counselor," the first script written directly for the screen by Pulitzer Prize-winner Cormac McCarthy, author of "No Country For Old Men" and "The Road," has been one of the hottest projects in Hollywood. Swiftly snapped up by the producers of "The Road," the film soon had Ridley Scott attached to direct, and man-of-the-moment Michael Fassbender locked into the lead role, an attorney who gets way over their head in the drugs trade.

Accusations of ageism fly around Hollywood all the time, but they seemed to be fairly definitively refuted in recent weeks when a 78-year-old became the hottest screenwriter in town after his film sold, attracted Ridley Scott and Michael Fassbender, and was fast-tracked into production this May. Of course, it helps if that 78-year-old is Cormac McCarthy, the Pulitzer prize-winning author of "Blood Meridian," "All The Pretty Horses," "The Road" and the source material for Best Picture winner "No Country For Old Men." But it's still a rare achievement, to get a film from the page to a greenlight, with A-list talent attached, in only a matter of days.
