It wasn't that long ago when National Association of Theater Owners stated that movie trailers were too long, showed off too much and they wanted to mandate Hollywood to cut 'em down. And frankly, when something like a 4-minute trailer for "White House Down" drops, showing what looks like every beat of the movie as well as every major setpiece, it's hard not to see their point. But since we're here, let's dive into this thing anyway.

When Roland Emmerich makes a movie, more often than not you can bet that he’s going to go big. You could say that he’s a filmmaker who prefers an epic scale, and an argument could be made that he’s actually modern cinema’s equivalent to a David Lean. Okay, okay, we jest… but trust Emmerich of all people to look at a classic Lean epic and decide that of all things, he’s going to make it bigger.

Let’s face it, when you go see a Roland Emmerich film, what you see is what you get. You either like his mega-budgeted movies of destruction or you don’t. Nevertheless, his films (“2012”, “The Day After Tomorrow”) tend to make a ton of money and his upcoming effort “White House Down” is another big budget blockbuster that hopes to replicate that success. But, judging from his interview with Empire, it sounds as if Emmerich is looking to go into a completely different direction with his next film and it actually sounds pretty interesting.

No one quite suits the title of Master of Disaster quite like Roland Emmerich, the director behind such bombastically apocalyptic visions as "Independence Day," "Godzilla," "The Day After Tomorrow" and "2012." Emmerich has gleefully destroyed major monuments, turning the White House into kindling and New York City into a giant frozen puddle. In his latest oversized spectacle "White House Down," starring Channing Tatum as a put-upon would-be Secret Service agent and Jamie Foxx as the endangered Commander-in-Chief, Emmerich returns to the location of his most iconic detonation, this time exploring the bonds between father and daughter while also blowing up a lot of stuff and having many people get shot in gloriously violent ways. Earlier today we got a peek at the trailer (which you can watch below) as well as a glimpse of about ten minutes of additional footage. While the movie doesn’t come out until June 28th, we're pretty sure that it's going to be one of the summer's most satisfying blockbusters.

Oh, I guess we're still talking about this. It seems that every six months to year, talk of the forever developing "Independence Day" sequels -- yes, there are two, and at one point they were rumored to shoot back-to-back. Well, they're apparently called "ID Forever," and talking to press today about this summer's explosion-y "White House Down" (the trailer is arriving imminently), Roland Emmerich dropped some tiny morsels about the followups to his alien invasion blockbuster.

An American thriller film by Roland Emmerich, the guy who directed super-sized blockbusters like "Independence Day, " "Godzilla" and "2012" and starring Channing Tatum, "White House Down" might just be the movie of summer 2013 if you're into loud spectacle. Tatum, who has arguably had the best 2012 of any male contemporary thanks to three over-$100 million dollar grossers ("The Vow," "21 Jump Street" and "Magic Mike") stars as a United States Secret Service agent who must rescue the President of the United States (Jamie Foxx) from a paramilitary group that has taken over the White House. Let's guess, he's new and unexperienced (first day on the job?), but somehow he "Die Hard"s it and against all odds and saves the day.

Well, Channing Tatum has officially arrived. After powering two of the biggest hits of the year so far with "The Vow" and "21 Jump Street," the hard working actor is being given the keys to a Roland Emmerich blockbuster. That's not a bad reward at all.

Akiva Goldsman Looking At Tom Hiddleston & Benjamin Walker To Lead Directorial Debut 'Winter's Tale'

First up is "Winter's Tale," set to mark the big-screen directorial debut of Akiva Goldsman, the Oscar-winning writer of "A Beautiful Mind," and smack-deserving writer of "Batman & Robin" and "The Da Vinci Code." Announced back in February, the film sees Goldsman tackle Mark Helprin's much-praised 1983 novel of the same name, which follows an orphan on the run from a criminal gang, who breaks into a New York mansion, only to fall in love with a dying woman, with reincarnation, apocalypse, rainbow bridges and a flying white horse all cropping up as well. It's something of a passion project for the screenwriter, who's been attached since 2009, and he spent the weekend performing some chemistry reads with some young talent for the lead roles.

Jada & Willow To Also Feature?It was in spring 2010 that word first cropped up about possible back-to-back sequels to the blockbuster "Independence Day," with shooting said to take place as early as this year. Well, that didn't happen, and megastar Will Smith went on to make another franchise sequel instead in the shape of "Men In Black 3," but once again, the sequels are rearing their heads. Director Roland Emmerich, who has long been saying that once a story is in place they'll move forward, teased during an interview with The Lantern earlier this week when he said, "I'd say hold tight. It's happening soon." And it looks like it is.
