Geez, it's been quite the topsy turvy week for the Bond franchise. Mere hours after names like Nicolas Winding Refn, Ang Lee, Tom Hooper, David Yates and Shane Black were tossed around as considerations for the director's chair of "Bond 24," Sam Mendes went ahead and re-upped for the job himself. It was a surprising turn of the events, especially given that the "Skyfall" helmer said back in the spring that the prospect of directing another Bond movie made him "physically ill." Well, it looks like he's found a cure.

The tantalizing possibilities: Ang Lee, Tom Hooper, David Yates, Shane Black, Nicolas Winding Refn were all evidently being considered for the next James Bond movie (though one manager for one filmmaker we won't name called the claim "funny"; Christopher Nolan's name also popped up.) But before we can even consider a "Bond 24" directed by one of these auteurs -- a 3D version from Lee, a NSFW one from Refn and a close-up obsessed iteration from Tom Hooper -- word comes down that the much-beloved Sam Mendes who directed "Skyfall" -- the highest grossing film in the Bond canon by a wide margin -- is now interested in taking the plunge once again.

It won the BAFTA for Best British Film, it earned five Oscar nominations (taking home two statues), and its global box office haul was $1.1 billion. It even won big at the recent Empire awards. "Skyfall" was the seventh-biggest film of all time, grossing nearly twice as much as the next highest charting Bond film ("Casino Royale"), and the 2012 Sam Mendes-directed installment was unquestionably the biggest 007 film ever. But after a few months of hemming and hawing about whether he would take on the next Bond film -- with all fans nodding/mouthing "yes, yes, yes," with feverous approval -- Mendes decided to pass on the series and skip on directing what's known as "Bond 24."

Last night saw the 18th annual Jameson Empire Awards, presented annually by the UK film magazine, the biggest in the world, and one of the largest such ceremonies to have their winners voted for by the public. This year, there's been a big push for more recognition for the ceremony, with probably the starriest and glitziest evening in recent memory, and we were there last night to see the winners revealed.

Somewhat shocking (to fans), but not completely surprising news this AM. Sam Mendes, the director of "Skyfall," the highest grossing -- by a large margin with $1.1 billion -- and arguably most popular James Bond film ever decided to pass and won't be directing "Bond 24." While the "American Beauty" director suggested in recent interviews he might take on the next installment -- something the Bond producers would have loved, we're sure -- he had flipped and flopped and it doesn't come as huge surprise Mendes moved on if you've paid attention to his creatively peripatetic career.

Asked about returning to direct another Bond after the massive success of "Skyfall," Sam Mendes played it cool. "Do I want to do another one? I'm a shadow of my former self [laughs]. No, I don't know. I felt like everything I wanted to do with a Bond movie, I put into this film," he said last month. "So I would have to be convinced that I could do something that I loved and cared about as much if I was to do it again. I think the great risk of repeating oneself is that one doesn't have the great store of ideas that you have when you first tackle a subject." But could he be kicking the tires on it?
