Thought the awards season was long done? Not quite. Last night saw the 18th annual Jameson Empire Awards, presented annually by the UK film magazine, the biggest in the world, and one of the largest such ceremonies to have their winners voted for by the public. This year, there's been a big push for more recognition for the ceremony, with probably the starriest and glitziest evening in recent memory, and we were there last night to see the winners revealed.

Somewhat shocking (to fans), but not completely surprising news this AM. Sam Mendes, the director of "Skyfall," the highest grossing -- by a large margin with $1.1 billion -- and arguably most popular James Bond film ever decided to pass and won't be directing "Bond 24." While the "American Beauty" director suggested in recent interviews he might take on the next installment -- something the Bond producers would have loved, we're sure -- he had flipped and flopped and it doesn't come as huge surprise Mendes moved on if you've paid attention to his creatively peripatetic career.

Even those with cooler feelings about the film itself have to acknowledge that Sam Mendes' Bond movie "Skyfall" was a wild success. With a BAFTA for Best British Film, five Oscar nominations (winning two), and a global box office of $1.1 billion, making it the seventh-biggest film of all time, and nearly twice as big as "Casino Royale," the most successful 007 film before that, few could argue that it's been anything other than a triumph.

With "Skyfall" having wrapped up its billion dollar run and now available on home video, it's time to start thinking about the next entry in the series. We have seen some movement in the past few months, with John Logan hired back to pen the script, for what was initially rumored to be back-to-back films (more on that in a second), with director Sam Mendes said to be helping develop the story. But it looks like his involvement won't just end there.

Last year, before the film even opened in North America, Sam Mendes and John Logan, the director and writer of “Skyfall,” began developing a vampire-hunting TV series set in the 1800s. The pair pitched the series to various cable networks, and the show has now found a home at Showtime.

Asked about returning to direct another Bond after the massive success of "Skyfall," Sam Mendes played it cool. "Do I want to do another one? I'm a shadow of my former self [laughs]. No, I don't know. I felt like everything I wanted to do with a Bond movie, I put into this film," he said last month. "So I would have to be convinced that I could do something that I loved and cared about as much if I was to do it again. I think the great risk of repeating oneself is that one doesn't have the great store of ideas that you have when you first tackle a subject." But could he be kicking the tires on it?

Over the weekend, it sounds like more than a few of you checked out "Skyfall" -- $80 million+ worth of you, in fact. And around the rest of the world, it's even more, the film having taken over $500 million internationally since it started rolling out two weeks ago. And for the most part, it's been acclaimed as one of the best (if not the very best) entries in the long-running spy franchise to date.

We'll certainly give Marvel credit for doing the impossible in creating a linked cinematic universe for their characters that is (mostly) coherent and complete. It's certainly no easy task, but they've managed to take their brand beyond the comic book store and into the pop cultural sphere at large, so kudos are definitely deserved. But when it comes to trying to snare A-list directors, they might want to rethink their approach.

This weekend the latest James Bond entry "Skyfall" opens nationwide and will be rocking people's socks off from coast to coast. Directed by Sam Mendes (read our interview here) and starring Daniel Craig in his third outing as the super-spy, it's a very different movie than the previous two installments ("Casino Royale" and "Quantum of Solace"), with more color, humor, suspense, and melancholy. While attending the film's press day, we learned the principles – Craig, Mendes, producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, Javier Bardem and Bond girl Naomie Harris -- detailed the making of the movie, and the various aspects of the production. Be warned, though: MAJOR SPOILERS follow. Read this piece after you see the movie. Seriously.

As we wrote yesterday, slavish devotion of franchise "traditions" and fan service isn't always a good thing. And for better or worse, "Skyfall" has a lot of winks and nods to the past throughout the 23rd Bond adventure, but this proposed move probably would have been one step too far.
