It's coming on two years since Scott Cooper's country music drama "Crazy Heart" got Jeff Bridges an Oscar and launched the director into the stratosphere. He's certainly not been lacking in projects to move to next: he was developing the western crime picture “The Hatfields and the McCoys”; was shortlisted for "Gangster Squad"; signed on to direct a remake of the Argentinian thriller "Carancho"; he's also attached to the Comanche drama "Empire Of The Summer" and this spring, he came on to re-write and direct the Black List-approved "The Low Dweller." Phew. While none of those projects seem to have achieved any forward momentum, Cooper has reportedly latched onto something new, a movie that was brewing for none other than writer/director Noah Baumbach.

Say what you will about music video director turned feature filmmaker Francis Lawrence, but when "I Am Legend" destroyed the box office, he quickly vaulted himself into the top tier of big budget filmmakers. That said, he seems to be making some considerable moves away from easily categorized tentpoles. This spring will see the release of the Depression-era circus drama (really) "Water For Elephants" with Robert Pattinson, Reese Witherspoon and Christoph Waltz and it looks for one of his future projects, Lawrence will shift gears dramatically again.

One of the most hotly sought-after directorial jobs going at the moment -- or at least the one that's leaked the widest-ranging wishlist-- is Warner Bros' period action-drama "Tales From The Gangster Squad." Based on a seven-part series of articles in the LA Times, the film's been in the works for a couple of years now, with a script from former cop and current writer on "Castle," Will Beall, and focuses on a special division of the LAPD formed in 1946 to keep east coast mobsters, led by Mickey Cohen, out of the city. (A rather darker take on the material can be seen in "L.A. Confidential")
