Janis Joplin Biopic Starring Amy Adams Back On, Lee Daniels To Direct

The year was 2010, and at the time Amy Adams was attached to play famed rocker Janis Joplin with "City Of God" helmer Fernando Meirelles to helm. Or that was at least the plan. And then there was nothing heard again about a biopic until earlier this year when "Martha Marcy May Marlene" helmer Sean Durkin signed up for "Joplin" with Nina Arianda in the lead role. And now, there is some fierce competition from Adams, as her movie is back moving, not only eyeing a similar start date but bringing a name director along with it.

After making a big splash last year with his unnerving indie "Marth Marcy May Marlene," director Sean Durkin is beginning to line up an impressive slate of projects. While reports that he was going to tackle a TV remake of "The Exorcist" ultimately seem to be erroneous (and highly denounced by William Friedkin), he since nabbed the gig helming the long-developing Janis Joplin biopic "Janis." But he isn't done with the small screen, and will tackle a show that will take him across the pond.

Of all the long-developing music biopics out there in the world, a movie about Janis Joplin nearly tops the list of much dicussed, but unmade projects. Before Fernando Meirelles made "360," he was linked to a version that would've starred Amy Adams and been produced by Wyck Godfrey of "Twilight" fame. And over the years, names ranging from Pink to Zooey Deschanel to Renee Zellweger have all cropped up to play the iconic singer, without much happening. But it looks like all the pieces are in place for what could be a very unique pairing.

If there has been one constant in "The Exorcist" franchise, it's that none of the sequels or prequels have ever come close to touching the terror or brilliance of William Friedkin's groundbreaking original. Nor have any of the countless exorcism movies since managed the feat either. But that isn't stopping another bite at the apple, as "The Exorcist" (recently named as the greatest horror movie ever by Time Out) is now getting prepped for the small screen in an expansive remake/prequel that will stretch out the terror over ten episodes.

First time feature-length filmmaker Sean Durkin made a huge splash last year with his haunting Sundance debut “Martha Marcy May Marlene.” About a damaged woman who struggles to re-assimilate into her family after fleeing an abusive cult, the poignant drama instantly placed Durkin and lead actress Elizabeth Olsen on the map as ones to watch (and indeed, the Durkin-produced “Simon Killer” already made waves at Sundance 2012).

Writers. As Robert Downey Jr. memorably described them during a recent Academy Awards ceremony: the "sickly little mole people." With the bulk of big movies seemingly coming from board games, comic books and theme park rides, those who actually bother to come up with something off their own back get a little more credit, and it's always seemed as though the Best Original Screenplay Oscar has carried a little more prestige.

From the mind of Sean Durkin, “Martha Marcy May Marlene” is an unsettling and stunning experience (check out our Sundance review). The film follows the dual narrative of Martha (Elizabeth Olsen), a young girl who becomes absorbed into a small cult community, only to escape to the confines of her sister’s lake house. As we see both parts of this story run parallel, we discover that Martha may not be ready to assimilate back into society, as she quarrels with her sister and her sister's husband, unable to understand what could be considered a “right” way to behave. Meanwhile, we also are given a window into her life on the cult commune led by the creepily magnetic Patrick played by John Hawkes.
