Sofia Coppola
Perhaps only one live action, children's fantasy adventure is enough for Joe Wright. With the director busy ramping up "Pan," his new take on the stories of J.M. Barrie, he's exiting a long developing project that he's been linked to for a while.

Sofia Coppola
Since first finding her feet as an actress in promos for Sonic Youth and Madonna before moving on into directing, Sofia Coppola has inextricably melded her observations from the music scene into the DNA of her cinematic efforts. Though she’s filtered both worlds through an affectionate and melancholic tone, a strong sense of humor has crept in as well, and as with Spike Jonze and his “Jackass” origins, we’ve got a taste of Coppola’s early days involving herself in some truly manic shenanigans.

Sofia Coppola Fairyland
A young woman coming of age, the culture of celebrity and art.... it's all very familiar territory for Sofia Coppola so perhaps it's no surprise she's gravitating to a new gig with just those elements.

It looks like Arcade Fire don't have complete ownership of premiering new material through unique outlets. French rockers Phoenix are still out promoting their latest LP Bankrupt! and frontman Thomas Mars' wife, the little-known indie filmmaker Sofia Coppola (ha), has directed the band's latest video for the tune "Chloroform." And where has it debuted? Online at MoMA, of course.

While they're not quite Jay Z and Beyonce, perhaps they are the indie equivalent, with Sofia Coppola and Phoenix frontman Thomas Mars marking a pretty unique power couple. The recently married filmmaker and musician have collaborated creatively, with Phoenix contributing music to both "Somewhere" (the band scored the film) and "The Bling Ring" (which featured the song "Bankrupt!"). And now, the roles are being reversed.

20 great Debut/female directors
One of the less reported stories of this August’s film schedule is that the month not only saw three films released that were directed by women, but they were in fact three feature debuts — Lake Bell’s “In A World” opened to a rapturous reception (including ours) on the 9th, Jerusha Hess’ “Austenland” bowed the following week, and this Friday Jill Solloway’s “Afternoon Delight” begins its run (our review is here). One swallow, or even three, may not make a summer, but these green shoots must certainly be promising for those in favor of changing the current female:male ratio in the film directing profession (which runs at 1 to 15.24 in the U.S. according to a Sundance Institute report) to a number that isn’t so outrageously out of whack that you have to keep double checking it. Yep, it’s 1:15.24.

Sofia Coppola
Director Sofia Coppola’s latest film, “The Bling Ring,” is currently playing in theaters across the nation. Though that might not be readily apparent as the film is quietly flying under the radar amongst the heavy duty summer films battling it out at the box office. Regardless of its financial success, the movie has scored moderately well amongst critics. Though it isn’t blowing anyone away, the general consensus seems to be that it falls in line with the rest of Sofia’s work. (You can check out our own review of the film right here.)

The Bling Ring
American cinema seems preoccupied with the emptiness of excess, at least in the first half of 2013. Baz Luhrmann luxuriates in the meaningless wealth of "The Great Gatsby," while Harmony Korine put his own twisted spin on the dark soul of the American dream in "Spring Breakers." And now comes Sofia Coppola's "The Bling Ring," another look at the at-any-cost pursuit of celebrity and the worship of brand names, but it doesn't bring anything new to a conversation that seems to have run out of things to say.

Young people doing bad things seems to be a theme at the movies in 2013. During the spring we saw what happens when kids get rowdy, in "21 & Over" and Harmony Korine's cautionary tale of the American Dream, "Spring Breakers." The teen trouble will continue this summer as Sofia Coppola drops "The Bling Ring," which has a Cannes Film Festival premiere due in just a week or so. Some new images, a poster and the first review have just dropped online and all seem to point to good things.
