If there has been one common thread throughout Sofia Coppola's films to date, it's that they have focused on the stories of young women who are often engaged in some kind of act of rebellion. This can be traced all the way back to her pre-feature days, with her short films.

While the Cannes Film Festival may be the place where the finest auteurs from around the world come to unveil their latest offerings, the other side of the fest is the robust market where distributors and producers hawk their wares to buyers, hoping to sell foreign rights for their pictures. In order to help get contracts drawn up and cheques signed, clips or entire movies may be shown, but if those things aren't ready, sometimes a still photo will have to suffice.

While most of us on staff were far from fans of Sofia Coppola's last picture, "Somewhere" (a picture that does have its defenders, nevertheless), the filmmaker is so gifted, and has enough goodwill from her earlier pictures, that we're more than happy to follow her wherever she's going. And in the last few weeks, filming got underway on her latest, "The Bling Ring."

...and just like that, Emma Watson has quickly and boldly distanced herself from Hermione. Now that the franchise is over, the "Harry Potter" actress has been making strides to distance herself from the character she's best known for. And she's been making smart moves. She took a small (if thankless) role in "My Week With Marilyn," has the teen drama "Perks of Being a Wallflower" on the way this year, will next star in 'Potter' helmer David Yates' depression drama "Your Voice In My Head" and recently signed on to the lead in Guillermo del Toro's "Beauty and the Beast." And yet again, she's made another great move.

While television is now seen as fertile creative ground for filmmakers who can't find an opening in the franchise-heavy studio system, the commercial world is also an opportunity for a helmer to keep those movie making skills honed. And while we wait for Sofia Coppola to get her next feature film mounted -- which may be about the Hollywood Hills Burglar Bunch -- her latest venture into advertising will tide us over for now.

The perils, loneliness and emptiness of celebrity have a familiar theme for Sofia Coppola, explored in most her films including "Lost In Translation," "Marie Antoinette" and "Somewhere." And if a report coming out of TMZ is accurate, she's once again going to dip into that world, albeit from a different angle.
