It feels like an age since we've had a Spike Jonze movie in theaters. Of course the filmmaker has never had a particular sense of urgency to his output, with only three films in fourteen years, and a seven year gap between "Adaptation" and 2009's "Where The Wild Things Are." Even with terrific shorts like "I'm Here" to tide us over we've been looking longingly out the window for news of the director's next film, "Her."

A few weeks ago, we took out our crystal ball and speculated on what movies might be appearing at the Cannes Film Festival when it kicks off in about six weeks or so. We made some educated guesses, ruled some other movies out and tossed some ideas around as we wait for the official announcement from organizers later this month. Well, it appears a bit of a clearer picture is emerging -- sort of -- as a handful of titles have been ruled out.

While Spike Jonze has risen from a music video director to an acclaimed filmmaker, he's never forgotten his roots. He still finds time to produce the "Jackass" movies with his longtime friends, and dips his toes back into the music video world as well from time to time. His love of skateboarding hasn't wavered either: a longtime fan of BMX bikes and boards, Jonze is co-owner of the company Girl Skateboards. While we patiently wait for his next film "Her," starring Joaquin Phoenix, the director grabbed a camera and got back out on the street just like the old days.

Okay, this isn't entirely revealing stuff we sort of didn't already know, but considering how shrouded in mystery Spike Jonze's next feature is, this is a pretty nice new bit of official information. But before we get to it let's just recap for a moment. The new film, Jonze's first full length effort since 2009's sublime "Where the Wild Things Are," stars Joaquin Phoenix with a trio of leading ladies in "The Master" co-star Amy Adams, Rooney Mara and Olivia Wilde. Plot details thus were said to center on a man who fell in love with a Siri-like voice. But that's not quite accurate.

The return of Spike Jonze is an exciting prospect on its own but with Joaquin Phoenix as his lead and three leading ladies along side him in Amy Adams, Rooney Mara and Olivia Wilde, we're delightfully anticpating his upcoming, untitled project. Apparently centering a man who falls in love with a Siri-like computer voice presumably on an iPhone device, we now have a couple of set photos of a mustached Phoenix running around a subway station before lazing around on a Manhattan beach.

Filmmaker Spike Jonze is apparently not content to just settle for the most talented cast in Hollywood to join his next film. Evidently he wants the most beautiful one as well. In a Deadline report about Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions landing international rights from for Jonze's next untitled project, the trade drops the little nugget of info that Olivia Wilde has also joined the cast.

As far as switcheroos go, director Spike Jonze can't really complain as his upcoming untitled effort has lost one hot young actress, only to be replaced by another.

It has been three, far too long years since Spike Jonze's last feature film, the wonderful "Where The Wild Things Are" and while various videos and shorts he's done in the interim -- including "I'm Here" and "Scenes From The Suburbs" -- were nice holdovers, we're glad that his next movie, penned by Charlie Kaufman, appears to be taking shape. First announced over a year ago, Megan Ellison and her Annapurna shingle got things rolling by backing the project and over 2011 Joaquin Phoenix and Carey Mulligan came aboard. Now, two more great actresses appear to be boarding the film.

It's hard to believe that just two years ago the world was waking up to Carey Mulligan. The actress seemed to come out of nowhere with her turn in Lone Scherfig's "An Education," and rather than try and go for big paydays in tentpole or franchise movies, Mulligan has wisely opted to work with filmmakers instead. Jim Sheridan ("Brothers"), Oliver Stone ("Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps"), Mark Romanek ("Never Let Me Go"), Nicolas Winding Refn ("Drive") and Steve McQueen ("Shame") now grace her filmography, with Baz Luhrmann being added this fall as she shoots "The Great Gatsby." And Mulligan isn't stopping there, as Variety report, she's adding two more helmers to the list.
