With exactly two weeks left on his Kickstarter campaign, Spike Lee has raised just over half of the $1,250,000 he's looking for to fund his next joint. More rewards have been added, friends and colleagues continue to voice their support and Lee is driving hard to the hoop for the movie that he's still keeping the details about under wraps. But this week he's unveiled slightly more.

Spike Lee
This past week or so, it's been all about Spike Lee doin' work. The filmmaker launched a Kickstarter campaign for his next film last week, and faced immediate support and criticism for his efforts to crowdsource $1.25 million dollars, but he's been pushing forward with the enthusiasm he's known for. He's received high profile support and funds from Steven Soderbergh, dropped his list of Essential Films that he gives his students and has been spending a lot of time elaborating how his efforts are bringing a new audience to Kickstarter. But he may have reached a tipping point in defending his latest joint.

Spike Lee, a man with his finger on multiple pulses, is the latest big-name, big-brain, sometime-Hollywood director to throw up his hands at the current state of the industry and decide that he might as well get his money from somewhere else: in this case, as in many others, Kickstarter where he's been supported by arguably the figurehead of the emerging ex-industry malcontents, Steven Soderbergh.

...and the great Kickstarter experiment continues with Spike Lee, who launched the campaign for his next untitled movie last week. As it gets to its seventh day, he has raised $310,000, which means he will need to keep the cash rolling it at the current rate just to get to the $1.25 million he's looking for by time the Kickstarter project ends in just over three weeks. But Spike hasn't been quiet. On Friday he drew more attention to his campaign by sharing his list of Essential Films for filmmakers he gives his students at NYU, and there's been even more from the filmmaker over the weekend.

Spike Lee
At the beginning of the week, Spike Lee launched a Kickstarter campaign for his next film, once again prompting the whole debate about crowd-sourcing by folks who could feasibly raise the cash themselves. And while it says something about our movie culture that both "Veronica Mars" and Zach Braff had far, far exceeded the $240,000 or so Lee has raised so far (we suppose people like the familiar over the new and potentially challenging), we'll leave that debate for a later date. But if this Kickstarter has been good for anything so far, it's increased presence of the always intriguing Spike Lee.

Well, here's a pretty good summary of this news, courtesy of Matt Patches: "Kickstarter: Veronica Mars movie tapped cult fever, Zach Braff relied on Garden State love, Spike Lee asks us to believe in auteurship." Indeed, if the crowd-sourcing campaigns that have lit up social media sites drew on nostalgia and dedicated fan-bases, Spike Lee is hoping that folks who want to see and support real cinema will reach into their pockets and help him get his next movie made. That's right, a Spike Lee joint has just hit Kickstarter.

Oldboy trailer
There's only ever one way a remake of Park Chan-wook's "Oldboy" was ever going to even a have a chance of approaching an original -- embracing the fact the story requires a hard-R to get told right. And for the first trailer for Spike Lee's take on the material, the studio is making it clear that they've gone right to the limit and then some in bringing it to American audiences. Now the question is: does it work?

For every movie poster, there are usually a half dozen discarded ideas that we never see. But sometimes, those outcast ideas aren't so bad. Movie marketing is usually a dryly straightforward process, and generally, studios prefer a direct and clear (and usually boring) approach over anything creative, enigmatic or that might possibly make an audience have to think. That being said, the first teaser poster for Spike Lee's "Oldboy" remake was both direct and mysterious, with folks familiar with the original knowing exactly what it was referencing, while newcomers were left to puzzle it out. But in a different world, the following posters could have been our first impression of the film.

Though it’s been four years since Michael Mann last directed a feature film, it wasn’t for lack of trying. In addition to the currently-shooting -- and still-untitled -- international-cyber-crime thriller, Mann has the historical epic “Agincourt” and the long-gestating Robert Capa biopic, among countless others. Now The Wrap is reporting that the “Heat” director’s workload just got a little lighter.

To remake or not to remake, that is the question. And in general, it's not something we're big fans of. But Spike Lee taking on Park Chan-Wook's "Oldboy? Yeah, we'll roll the dice on that.
