Spike Lee Would Love To Make A Musical With Prince Or Kanye West; 'Red Hook Summer' Aiming For Summer Release

It says something about the state of film financing today that Spike Lee had to pay out of pocket himself for his upcoming "Red Hook Summer." But it also makes its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival all the more fitting, at an event where big stars tend to take to center stage, the filmmaker is arriving with a movie starring a cast nearly entirely made of unknowns, telling exactly the sort of story Hollywood just doesn't make. And Lee is well aware that the people who control the money, just aren't interested in black characters or stories.

We have to say, we're starting to become a little concerned about "Oldboy." Never exactly the most necessary of remakes in the first place, our interest was piqued when Spike Lee signed on to direct, swiftly followed by Josh Brolin; a talented, interesting pair who seemed to promise that this would be something a little more special than a quick-and-easy remake.

With 2011 winding down, all eyes are now on 2012 and what the future will bring and one project that has been knocking around for a while is "Prisoners" -- but the new year should bring the film some better fortune.

Despite recently confirming an offer to play the lead antagonist in Spike Lee's upcoming remake of Park Chan-wook's "Oldboy," it looks like things just haven't worked out for Colin Firth as he has now reportedly turned down the chance to star opposite Josh Brolin in the project.

Well, here's a pretty big surprise. Eddie Murphy, who was poised for a comeback with "Tower Heist," seemed to have those hoped dash by the film underperforming at the box office, coupled with his association in the Ratnergate Oscar ceremony fallout, that led to the comic actor stepping down as the host. And just when we pegged Murphy as simply returning to his recent run of dreck -- he's got "Hong Kong Phooey" on the horizon for chrissakes -- we were hit out of left field with this.

And More We Learned From Lee & The Commemorative Screening Of '25th Hour' At New York's Film Society of Lincoln CenterOn September 11th, the Walter Reade Theater in New York City hosted a special screening of “25th Hour.” Still as alive and vital as it was upon its release nine years ago, the film serves as a historical landmark as the first picture to shoot in New York City following the 9/11 attacks (we ranked it very high on our list of best films of 2002 when we did our decade wrap-up in 2010).

One of the more ambitious projects in recent memory, "The Dark Tower," was canceled earlier this week by Universal Pictures. It's not a surprise, as the studio also recently put the kibosh on a $150 million-budgeted R-rated take on "At the Mountains of Madness" by Guillermo del Toro and Ron Howard, and Akiva Goldsman's multi-platform, multi-film Stephen King adaptation was arguably more risky and definitely much more expensive. We here at The Playlist root for movies to be good, but we mostly root for movies to be made, for a director to complete their vision and for it to have a chance to reach an audience and possibly become a part of the popular culture.

It's been one helluva day for Spike Lee news. In case you missed it this morning, word hit that the writer/director was reprising his role as Mookie from "Do The Right Thing" in a new, totally under the radar project called "Red Hook Summer." But it looks like the big, blockbuster project Lee was linked to last week is now official.
