The Academy loves Stephen Daldry. Every film he has directed thus far -- "Billy Elliot," "The Hours" and "The Reader" -- has been nominated for Best Director, with the last two also taking Best Picture nods, in addition to a host of other honors. And, even though Daldry's latest effort, an adaptation of Jonathan Safran Foer's "Extremely Loud And Incredibly Close," has yet to be unveiled this late in the game, the film will seems poised to hit it big with voters with its post 9/11 dramatics.

Richard Curtis -- who wrote "Four Weddings and a Funeral, "Bridget Jones's Diary" and directed "Love Actually" and "Pirate Radio" -- has much to celebrate with his adaptation of Michael Morpurgo's "War Horse" hitting theaters later this month, but he's not taking any time off. He's already hard at work on his next adaptation of another children's book by a British author, this time to be directed by Stephen Daldry for Working Title. Andy Mulligan's second novel is called "Trash," but to Curtis, it's pure gold.

With the names Richard Curtis ("Love Actually," "Four Weddings And A Funeral") and Stephen Daldry ("The Hours," "Billy Elliot") attached, you might think this is automatic Oscar bait, but what they're cooking up together looks like more of an adventure film with some serious cred behind it.

After a superb debut a decade ago with "Billy Elliot," it looked like theatre director Stephen Daldry could become a real force in the cinema world. But while his films have undoubtedly become regular awards bait, the quality seems to slip with each picture: "The Hours" has a rich ensemble, but they're overshadowed by Nicole Kidman and her prosthetic nose, and the film as a whole is a little turgid, while "The Reader" is one of the worst Best Picture nominees in recent memory. Nevertheless, he's always been able to attract impressive casts, and the two new additions to his latest film are no exception.

Take that, Ken Jennings. 12-year-old Thomas Horn, who wowed America (OK, the American that watches "Jeopardy!"), in October by taking home $31,800 on the game show has now parlayed that turn into a feature film career, landing the plum lead role in Stephen Daldry's adaptation of Jonathan Safran Foer's "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close."
