Anyone who's heard him at a Q&A, been present for one of his lectures, or even listened to a commentary knows one thing about Steven Soderbergh; he's a great conversationalist. Some filmmakers can barely talk about their own work, but a discussion with Soderbergh won't just involve him talking candidly about his own process and films, but also anything that happens to come up.

You might not remember, but back when Steven Soderbergh's virus thriller "Contagion" hit theaters last fall, it also landed on over 250 IMAX screens. While the director has dabbled in many genres and styles over the years, we would've thought IMAX might prove to be more of a gimmick than an aesthetic he would pursue. But talking recently with the AV Club, Soderbergh admits he too was surprised to be taken with the format, calling the "Contagion" IMAX edition "awesome."

For the last couple of years, Steven Soderbergh, one of the most acclaimed filmmakers of the last few decades, started to talk about retirement. Initially dismissed as a joke, the ambiguity played up by the director, it's become increasingly clear that Soderbergh is serious about the proposition.

Steven Soderbergh has tried his hand in many things over the years including a relationship drama, coming-of-age tales, crime capers, retro post-war noir, Spanish-language epics, and most recently, a disaster movie. But one thing he'd never really taken on before? The action movie. There had been some slick set pieces in the "Ocean's Eleven" trilogy, but nothing else that really qualifies. Until now, that is. Friday sees the release of "Haywire," the director's first full-on actioner, and the first of four films set to be released ahead of his hiatus from filmmaking.

With "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" improbably inspiring a fashion line at H&M, could a branded clothing spinoff for "The Hunger Games" be far off?

For a guy who is set to retire/take a hiatus from filmmaking, Steven Soderbergh couldn't be more busy. "Contagion" just hit theaters last fall, the stripper pic "Magic Mike" is wrapped and headed to theaters this summer, and oh yeah, he's got another movie, finished for a while now, hitting the multiplex in just a couple of weeks. It's called "Haywire" and it will kick your ass.

Perhaps we're not quite as excited for this film as E! Online writer Ted Casablanca, whose breathless reports about the picture are kind of amusing (even straight guys didn't write this breathlessly about, say, "Showgirls," did they?), but two Steven Soderbergh films in one year ain't too bad. The first one of 2012 arrives in January, Gina Carano's action thriller "Haywire." The picture also co-stars Channing Tatum, who's directly responsible for Soderbergh's second film of next year, the stripper film "Magic Mike." Based on Tatum's experiences as a male stripper in his pre-fame days, the actor pitched it to the filmmaker a few months after "Haywire" wrapped and the Academy Award-winning director was intrigued by the prospect of a film milleu he'd never really seen onscreen before.
