What’s up with those crazy Danish filmmakers and their compulsion to pile it on? The latest from Oscar-winning filmmaker Susanne Bier (“In A Better World”) is like watching a long game of Jenga. As every sub plot, reveal and character… err, caricature that is, gets stacked on top of each other, the more inevitable it is that the whole thing will come tumbling down. And while “Love is All You Need” is by no means a disaster, it simply can’t support all that weight.

We always like when a director changes course, tackles different kinds of material and stays unpredictable, and Susanne Bier is doing just that. This helmer's Italian romantic trifle, "Love Is All You Need," heads to theaters later this month, she's got the Depression era drama "Serena" starring Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper in the can and ready (presumably) for a festival appearance some time in 2013 and next up? How about a contemporary domestic drama about life in the digital age?

“Love Is All You Need,” the light rom-com from Susanne Bier (“In A Better World”), comes out late in the spring and Sony Picture Classics has just released a new, domestic theatrical trailer online for all of us to see. Bier had developed quite the reputation over the years for sobering dramas such as “Open Hearts” and “After the Wedding,” but here she has taken a much lighter detour, giving us a beautiful look of Southern Italy along the way.

Danish director Susanne Bier, who was behind the much acclaimed, but decidedly tough likes of "Brothers," "After the Wedding" and Hollywood debut "Things We Lost In the Fire," is not exactly the obvious choice for a romantic comedy. Particularly given that she just won the Foreign Language Oscar a couple of years back for "In a Better World." And yet Bier began her career with rom-coms like 'The One and Only" and "Once In a Lifetime," so her new film, "Love Is All You Need," perhaps shouldn't come as such a shock.

Generally known for her tough, wrenching dramas, it looks like Susanne Bier has taken a page out of the Woody Allen playbook (though without the name brand, ensemble cast) for her upcoming effort "Love Is All You Need." Featuring an exotic location, a potpourri of languages, and a mix of romance and drama, the film looks like it's poised to be a breezy little number.

Originally set to team Darren Aronofsky and Angelina Jolie, it was back in January that the trio of Susanne Bier, Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper boarded a new iteration of "Serena," the adaptation of Ron Rash's period-drama novel. The project looks to be coming together quickly though having now added Rhys Ifans and Toby Jones to its cast in gearing for a March shoot.

Danish director Susanne Bier has never been shy about traveling the world for her films. Her Oscar-winning "In A Better World" split time between Denmark and an African refugee camp. Her upcoming comedy "All You Need Is Love" is set in Italy, while past efforts have seen her journey to the United States ("Things We Lost In The Fire") and (partially) to India ("After The Wedding"), and Bier has lined up another effort that will see her returning to Africa.

Sometimes, the stars don't align. It's as simple as that when projects don't come together and roll in front of cameras, and while in early 2010 Darren Aronofsky and Angelina Jolie were signed to direct and star in the period drama "Serena," it simply didn't come together. But now, nearly two years later, an equally compelling roster of talent are coming aboard, and will hopefully get this one moving.

While it has pretty much zero influence on the awards season stateside, the European Film Awards, which are essentially the Euro version of the Oscars, presented their winners tonight and it looks like Lars Von Trier's brief moment as a pariah is over.
