A Second Chance
A Susanne Bier movie is coming to Toronto, and sorry, Jennifer Lawrence fans, it's not "Serena." That Depression-era drama is still M.I.A., and Bier has since gone to make two more films, including this one, "A Second Chance."

Cate Blanchett, The Dig, Susanne Bier
Susanne Bier doesn't stop. Already in post-production on "A Second Chance" starring Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (first look here), and with "Serena" forever dangling over her head as that completed but still somewhat shelved Bradley Cooper/Jennifer Lawrence joint, the director is already plowing ahead on new a movie, one that is aiming to shoot this fall, with a pretty big star attached.

A Second Chance
While we'll keeping asking, "Where's 'Serena' starring Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence?" until our throats are dry, director Susanne Bier keeps powering on to new movies. Last year, she dropped the romance "Love Is All You Need," and now she's already at work on her next film.

We'll start off this Susanne Bier post with the question we've been asking in the last few posts about the Danish helmer—where's "Serena" starring Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence? Even as the filmmaker keeps lining up projects—"Mary Queen Of Scots," "The Rules Of Inheritance," "This Beautiful Life"—there has been pretty much nothing about the Depression-era drama, even though it wrapped ages ago. But whatever the status of that picture, Bier keeps piling on new projects to her slate.

While we continue to wait for Susanne Bier's "Serena" — you remember, the Depression-era drama starring Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper that was quietly picked up by Magnolia at Cannes and seems poised for a 2014 release — it looks like the director is gearing up yet another project. You may recall that over a year ago it was announced that Saoirse Ronan was going to star in "Mary Queen Of Scots" (not to be confused with the film hitting TIFF)...and then not much else was heard. Well it looks like it has found a helmer in Bier.

While we continue to patiently wait for whatever Jennifer Lawrence and director Susanne Bier cooked up with the Depression-era drama "Serena" (along with Bradley Cooper), it looks like the experience was a very, very good one for the actress and director as they are planning to pair up again.

Review: Overstuffed 'Love Is All You Need' An Unsatisfying, Predictable Rom-Com From Susanne Bier

What’s up with those crazy Danish filmmakers and their compulsion to pile it on? The latest from Oscar-winning filmmaker Susanne Bier (“In A Better World”) is like watching a long game of Jenga. As every sub plot, reveal and character… err, caricature that is, gets stacked on top of each other, the more inevitable it is that the whole thing will come tumbling down. And while “Love is All You Need” is by no means a disaster, it simply can’t support all that weight.

We always like when a director changes course, tackles different kinds of material and stays unpredictable, and Susanne Bier is doing just that. This helmer's Italian romantic trifle, "Love Is All You Need," heads to theaters later this month, she's got the Depression era drama "Serena" starring Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper in the can and ready (presumably) for a festival appearance some time in 2013 and next up? How about a contemporary domestic drama about life in the digital age?

“Love Is All You Need,” the light rom-com from Susanne Bier (“In A Better World”), comes out late in the spring and Sony Picture Classics has just released a new, domestic theatrical trailer online for all of us to see. Bier had developed quite the reputation over the years for sobering dramas such as “Open Hearts” and “After the Wedding,” but here she has taken a much lighter detour, giving us a beautiful look of Southern Italy along the way.
