It was quite a 2011 for Terrence Malick. Not only did the director return with his long awaited, Palme d'Or winning "The Tree Of Life," he's got four films in various stages of development including the IMAX documentary "Voyage Of Time," the untitled Ben Affleck/Rachel McAdams romance and two pictures set to shoot this year, "Lawless" and "Knight Of Cups." And yet, with all that going on, people are still talking about "The Tree Of Life" (which has placed on many year end, Best Of lists) and it's not hard to see why. The ambitious film's extended creation and early life sequence is still one of the most discussed of last year, and as you might expect, there was even more that was eventually abandoned by the director in the decades long development of the project.

Well, with twelve months basically in the can, it’s time to put the year to bed, and hopefully, into a little perspective. 2011 was, well, just another year in movies, and that's not to say it was an uninteresting year, it's just that while things are evolving, and not always for the better, Hollywood, indies and the general state of filmmaking kept on trucking like they had to.

While "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" might not have been the box office smash the studio were hoping for (it turns out there's a reason people don't open three-hour-long R-rated thrillers the week before Christmas), there's one person who's done pretty well out of the whole thing: Rooney Mara. Only eighteen months ago, the actress was best known as the much-derided lead of the "Nightmare On Elm Street" remake, and for being twelfth-billed in "Youth In Revolt." But then she took a small role in David Fincher's "The Social Network," a performance that saw her win the much sought-after part of Lisbeth Salander in the director's next film, and if anyone's come out smelling of roses, it's her.

Sunday was a major day for Oscar prognosticators, as a number of critics organizations went live with their end-of-2011 honors. Some films gained support, and some lost quite a bit of steam, but for those of you who look at the whole thing like a horse race, there was a lot of movement amongst a thick group of thoroughbreds.

It's kind of remarkable to think that, almost a year ago, Jessica Chastain was barely known. Sure, geekier film folks (like us) might have known us as her as the girl who Terrence Malick had cast in "The Tree of Life"...

Maintaining a career after breaking through as a Bond girl is not the easiest thing in the world. Just ask Izabella Scorupco or Denise Richards. If you can find them. But the current batch seem to be doing alright so far. Rosamund Pike has gone from strength to strength since "Die Another Day," and both Eva Green and Gemma Arterton have worked steadily in interesting films since rolling in the hay with 007. But arguably the one with the most intriguing slate of projects ahead of her is Olga Kurylenko, who played female lead Camille Montes in last Bond entry "Quantum of Solace."

It has been a good year to be a Terrence Malick fan. Not only did the director finally deliver is long-awaited "The Tree Of Life," he's simply never been busier with four projects currently in the works: the Ben Affleck and Rachel McAdams-led, untitled romance; "Lawless" with Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Ryan Gosling, Rooney Mara and Haley Bennet; "Knight Of Cups" with Bale, Blanchett and Isabel Lucas; and the documentary "The Voyage Of Time." And while we patiently wait for these films to arrive whenever Malick decides they are done, it looks like we'll have something to tide us over.

That's His Next Film, Not His Next Next Film, His Next Next Next Film Or His Next Next Next Next FilmWhat in the name of grace and nature has gotten into Terrence Malick recently? With the announcement yesterday of two new projects both starring Christian Bale and Cate Blanchett -- "Lawless," also with Ryan Gosling and Rooney Mara, and "Knight of Cups" with Isabel Lucas -- it means that the reclusive auteur looks likely to make more films in the space of this decade than he did in the previous 35 put together. Of course, he unveiled "The Tree of Life" this year, and has the IMAX documentary "Voyage of Time" reportedly still in the works, not to mention his rumored involvement with "Green Lantern 2." Okay, that we just made up.
