Even without being massively fond of many of the films produced from his screenplays (not least his pretty bad directorial debut "London Boulevard"), we're fond of William Monahan and his salty dialogue, best embodied in his Oscar-winning script for "The Departed," and we're always hopeful that he'll come up with the goods. So despite our feelings about "London Boulevard," we're hopeful for his follow-up "Mojave," not least because of the cast he's assembling.

No matter what you think of Baz Luhrmann's "The Great Gatsby," opening this week in ultra-luxurious 3D, one thing's for sure – it looks pretty spectacular. Filled with lovingly crafted costumes, opulent sets, and computer generated imagery that makes ragtime New York seem like a quasi-futuristic metropolis, it is drunk on its own excess. It feels like the movie Luhrmann has been angling towards for a while and has finally achieved (thanks in part to the added dimensionality of 3D), for better or worse. It's a giant, gilded, vulgar monstrosity that overwhelms more often than it entertains. And it got us thinking about other movies whose similarly excessive styles have either been an asset or a detriment. So put on your 3D glasses, your best pink pinstripe suit, and grab a glass of bootleg liquor, for our list of 20 visually dazzling movies.

Terry Gilliam went on to direct such great films as “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” “Brazil” and “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” (to name just a few), but he began his career primarily as an animator. Before moving to England he was a strip cartoonist on Help! magazine, and then after making his trip across the pond one of his first gigs was as an animator for sequences on the children’s TV show “Do Not Adjust Your Set” which starred future Pythons Michael Palin, Eric Idle and Terry Jones, as well as other future comedy icons like David Jason.

The German series "Durch die Nacht mit..." ("Into The Night") is the gift that keeps on giving. The show, which gets two artists together and then just shoots them as they hang out and talk over a single day, has already yielded a great episode featuring Harmony Korine and Gaspar Noé (which you can watch right here). And now, making another case that a U.S. broadcaster (IFC maybe?) should snap up the rights and bring it over stateside, the show that aired this summer featuring Terry Gilliam and Jon Landis has made its way online.

The last we heard about Terry Gilliam's 20-minute short film "The Wholly Family" was well over a year ago, when it took home Best Short Film at the European Film Awards. Not bad at all for a movie that got its start as a project sponsored by the pasta company Garofalo as part of an annual series of films about Naples. Well, Gilliam took that basic premise, ran with it, and now you can finally watch it.

Uh oh, is the bromance between Johnny Depp and Terry Gilliam fracturing? The pair who teamed on "Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas" and "The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus" (with the actor stepping in along with Jude Law and Colin Farrell when Heath Ledger passed away during production) have famously been trying to mount "The Man Who Killed Don Quixote" for years, after the initial attempt was beset by all variety of disasters, chronicled in the documentary "Lost In La Mancha." It has pretty much been Gilliam's baby, a movie he's been trying to get back on the horse with for years, but late last week Depp stole his thunder.
