AFI Review: 'The ABCs Of Death' Won't Win Over Non-Horror Fans, But That's OK

Horror anthologies have been on the rise of late, with movies like "Trick 'r Treat," "Chillerama" and the found footage anthology "V/H/S" keeping the tradition alive. The latest anthology is "The ABCs of Death," which combines 26 shorts in what is less of an interwoven narrative like "Trick 'r Treat" or even a loosely connected anthology like "V/H/S" and more of a "Spike and Mike's Festival of Animation" of horror shorts, and we're not just saying that because of the use of animation and claymation. The end result provides a range of quality, from the inspired and creative to the lazy and insipid, but one that horror fans will certainly devour.

It ended up going a little unsung on release earlier this year, and not every Playlist staffer dug it, but this writer was quite taken with Ti West's "The Innkeepers" when he finally caught up with a few months back. An atmospheric, unsettling little ghost story with some fine performances from Sara Paxton and Pat Healy, it might have some silly moments and come a little unstuck at the end, but it was well made and genuinely creepy, cementing West's position as one of the fastest rising names in independent horror cinema.

It's strangely appropriate that the rising career of filmmaker Ti West hasn't quite been meteoric, if only because his indie horror features (five and counting, including "The House of the Devil" and his experimental sniper-in-the-woods thriller "Trigger Man") are known for their slow burn. Reverential to cinema past while shrewdly and artfully revitalizing tired horror tropes, West's naturalistic stories fit right into the wheelhouse of his producing mentor Larry Fessenden—whose Glass Eye Pix label has unleashed most of the 31-year-old filmmaker's projects, including his latest spooker, "The Innkeepers."

Aside from the deliberate pacing of his films and their haunting payoffs, Ti West is probably best known for doing exactly what he wants to do, when he wants to do it: after unsuccessfully attempting to remove his name from “Cabin Fever 2” when Lionsgate took the film away from him, he took on another sequel, “A Haunting in Georgia,” before deciding he didn’t want to undertake another project he couldn’t control from conception to completion. And looking at his films so far, he’s flaunted his individuality in the face of the rest of the industry’s genre dreck, avoiding trends or more easily-marketable ideas in favor of singular, original stories. All of which is why it comes as no small surprise that the next story fans will see from him is a segment from a found-footage anthology.

The residing prince of indie-horror Ti West's latest effort, "The Innkeepers," has been a bit slow to hit theaters. The picture, which stars Sara Paxton ("Shark Night 3D"), Pat Healy, Kelly McGillis (yes, that Kelly McGillis), and features a brief cameo by Lena Dunham, premiered at SXSW earlier this year and was supposed to see a release this fall.

Having told us at SXSW back in March that his next film may be the pharmaceutical testing/space film “The Side Effects,” West gave an update on the progress of that project to the crowd gathered in London for Film 4’s Fright Fest.
